I think I understand OP's preposition. You were saying that if we act accordingly to what those women accused us with, we are confirming their claims which further render us the 'bad guy' in the conflict. As result, They will be the righteous while giving us bad reputation and we will have to fight against their white knights, or in other word, fighting among ourselves?

TBH Why would someone has problem with those who exercise their independence and wanting to go their own way? Hmmmm, unless their independence cause some party to lose something of course.
