In terms of GPA I don't know but it means that you got a certain percentage on average in your U.K exams. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_undergraduate_degree_classification

I suppose that might depend on your job. If one loves research then doing a research-intensive subject can enable one to be as happy as life can be - but if you are intelligent and in a dead-end no-brainer job I suspect that could drive one quite bat-fuck insane.

It was actually a comment on mental health but I think I should have changed the headline.

One of the main reasons is the workplace. Powerful men often control companies. If men are given equal rights in the workplace with regards to raising a family it would mean that far more men will take maternity leave and this means $$$ for the companies. It's nothing to do with male rights it is a simple case of not losing a percentage of your workforce for the act of raising the next generation. Why do that when you have women and their equal rights to do that for you?

"Women are the winners in the battle of the sexes for jobs in the downturn." Pardon? Things like that don't help. But secondly, the tone of the article seems to imply that men losing jobs and women gaining jobs is an ideal thing. In fact, it is not only the ideal thing but the right thing. Women are outsmarting us, losing less jobs and creating business opportunities is a Good Thing (TM). 'Roll on the mancession' might be the ideal title for the way the article is written.

The tone of the article is appalling. It is pathetic to see well-natured papers like The Times becoming full of man-hating rhetoric and condescending tones. Agree, 'chaps'?
