Um.....I don't think they were directly necessary, but it got me the experience of interacting with women enough so that I was socially attractive to my now-wife. For the 40-year old women - Literally just be clean and relatively well-dressed, and indicate some interest. If they're into you, they'll let you know, and if they're not, you won't game them into it. Hydrate.

You just kinda know when it's time to throttle back. My last GF before my wife was 28 when I was 29, and while she was super fun in certain moments, she was a psychopath. Is it that he won't let you go, or won't pay for it? If my kid asked me to pay for something like that, it'd be "fuck no," followed by laughing. Whereas if he had saved up the money himself, it'd be, "I can think of 200 better things you can do with your money, still no."
