Shouldn't even be a debate. This is what karma looks like in real life, if you believe in that. If you don't believe in karma, this is what happens when the people you deal with day to day do not respect or trust you because you do bad things.

I think the point is that if your date thinks it's necessary to laugh and explain to some random server that you're not together then you probably shouldn't pick up the tab. Because your date has just expressed to you that she's not particularly interested. If you can't or won't buy your own dinner, don't accept an invitation to a dinner out.
