The UK is the only major country in the English-speaking world to call soccer "football." "Football" means gridiron in the US and Canada, Gaelic football I Ireland, rugby or aussie rules depending on where you are in Australia, and rugby in New Zealand. It does mean soccer in every language but English, but we are not talking about them.
