“Uses haha.” Holy shit. You’re right. It’s always bad.

Lol. I thought the same. What the hell does that mean? Mama cooks for me? I’m from a “good family” and have lots of high quality socially acceptable faux acquaintance friends? Pff. I had NO support system, got sober and dragged myself up from nothing. That’s a fucking flex.

“Tall skeleton and fat tall men” - I am screaming. Forevermore going to see men in these categories.

I got a promise ring from a boyfriend when I was 20. I thought it was sweet. I think he would have married me eventually. Shortly after he gave me this ring, he escalated his abuse to slapping me across the face. I dumped him immediately and never spoke to him again. Dodged that one haha. Funny, this same dude just tried to add me on Facebook, after twenty years of no contact. Block and delete. 🙄

General tips: Don’t make it obvious to anyone that you live alone. Don’t post anything personal on social media and dear god don’t post sexy pics / thirst traps (it’s just a magnet for the wrong attention). Think about the digital trail you’ve left, everywhere. Never use OLD lol. Take a self defense course. Be strategic about how you dress and move about the world. I find it easier to avoid clowns if I don’t draw attention to myself. I also need to be able to run in any shoes I wear if I’m going…

He’s a pedo. Law enforcement, divorce lawyer, asap. Also - potentially cheating? How is this not cheating? Odd how the cheating is the part she seems to focus on. I’d be more worried about my husband pursuing someone who is a minor.

Bluntly: A 39 year old man suddenly deciding he wants to settle down with someone ten years younger is potentially a sign of a man who dragged his heels for a decade, and has now decided he’s ready and is looking for the first woman he finds to meet his criteria. This would have me running. There are men who finally decide it’s time because of social pressure and their own internal clock. This is recipe for misery if you are looking for anything beyond a transactional relationship. Red flags all…

Excellent analysis. Always thought the dude looked creepy, couldn’t shake it. I mean look at his face.

I do this and I do it early. If he doesn’t respect my “no”, I’m out.

Nice work dodging this fool. I don’t explain myself to guys like this - I just block with no reply and leave them hanging for all eternity. I figure why waste a minute more of my life. Silence is powerful and it’s zero work for me.

Glad you dodged him. I might be missing something but if he was this much of a creep, what made you continue with the date? (eg go to a speakeasy, etc)?

This can’t be real. No way this was written by a woman.

Suggestion: Remove the “desperately want to escape parents” from the equation - pretend you already live on your own. Would you still want to move in with him? And, do you think it would be beneficial / would you like to live on your own before marriage? And, do you love him?

I moved in with a man who I thought was HV after we got engaged. We bought a house together. His behaviour changed drastically once we moved in. I realized that he thought he had me locked down and I wouldn’t leave at that point (he said as much), so he dropped his nice guy act. I outlined my expectations and when he wouldn’t meet them, I left very quickly. I feel that for me cohabitating was an important step in the vetting process. I shudder to think of having married him, moved in, and then h…

Translation - convo 1: “Fortunately for me I’ve got two weeks away from (wife / gf / real life) to fuck as many different women as possible with no pressure for commitment or decency, but let’s pretend I care about your feelings and throw in an ‘us.’” Convo 2: “This is a minute fraction of disclosure intended to set you at ease to distract you from the larger and more relevant fact that I am married with kids.”

I have one left. He’s on thin ice. He was in love with me years ago, told me directly, and we had an honest conversation where I clearly stated that I don’t feel that way. He never broached the topic again or made me feel uncomfortable, and went on to date other women and ultimately settle down with a long term partner. Yet I still have a nagging feeling he’s attracted to me and she picks up on it and is jealous. Its weird and it now makes me feel awkward and shitty, which I think makes the whol…

Thank you for this reminder. And I am so sorry this happened to you. Stating the obvious but he could have killed you.

Excellent post. This is why it’s all the more important to vet fully before becoming sexually invested. For me — and a lot of women — having slept with a man makes it 1000% harder to walk away. My brain works more effectively without the bonding hormones, thanks.

Uses the word “cheating” completely out of context. Say your favourite food is pizza and suddenly you start ordering nachos all the time. And he says, “you better not tell your pizza youre cheating on them with nachos.” IRL example (with details changed for anonymity). Who says that unless they’re thinking about cheating? Other one is telling you upfront - unsolicited - about how great a guy he is / trustworthy / monogamous / loyal, etc. If you are those things why say it it hasn’t been called i…

I am 42 and this so precisely describes my experience that my eyes blurred with tears as I read it. Thank you. The most important thing is to never give up. In giving up and accepting what harms us we participate in our own destruction. At the end, all we truly have is our own integrity. Thank you again for writing this. ❤️

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
