The point is just that if you are reasonably safe, then you should feel reasonably safe. That's the assumption that law makers should calculate with. How could they make laws that makes sense otherwise? People will feel all sorts of irrational things, and that is impossible to account for. In my country, Norway, you can sign on some special documents when you get married. (I have no idea what it's called in English. It's "særeie" in Norwegian, in case someone can translate it.) This way you get to have you bank account to yourself even when you divorce. (And I guess the same goes for you house, and other possessions.) Also, another law says that you can take out of a marriage what you brought in. So if you owned a house before you get married, it's still yours after.

I pretty sure only real fathers, (unless kid is adopted), have to pay child support here in Norway. I haven't heard about similar cases here. But, I quickly googled it, and found out about a young guy who knocked up a girl at a party. She didn't tell him, and he's got nothing to do with the kid.
