You’re exactly right. Breaking an engagement takes nothing. Divorce requires paperwork. It takes more to cancel the caterer than an engagement, the caterer got a contract and it’s on paper and it’s signed and they got your depo$it.

He wants to know what bothers her that she has no control over. Flip it and make it something trivial that you have 100% control over like “I have a hair appt. next week, I was thinking of a pixie haircut.” Or turn it into a superpower question “I would get super sight, be able to fly, super hearing, be able swim to the bottom of the ocean, or breathe in space.” But then ask him “what physical characteristics do you think people find most disappointing in you?” And smile.

Yes! The underlying message was “you’re stupid” and he said it to see if you’d agree. He was vetting OP. This guy wanted to know how low OP’s self esteem was so he could determine how much work he’d have to put into gaslighting her in the future. How would this friend feel if OP said “you’re stupid” to this guy or even to her? Would OP be considered kind or unkind? Neither, OP would be labeled a bitch. Yet guys get to do this and we’re expected to reward their behavior? Nah, sis. OP, good job on…

And if they press you for more details consider why they’re being so pushy. Are they trying to learn about the things you enjoy or are they already so insecure? A question like “what do you and your friend(s) plan to do?” Could be answered “try out a new restaurant/menu/cocktail” When I was pressed for details in the past I would do the two things that insecure men hate: I would laugh at them and say, “are you always this nosy?!” They don’t like it because you’re not laughing at one of their jok…
