Fair enough, honestly I just like to write for relaxation so it's not a waste of time or effort; more productive than watching TV. And I forgot which sub I was on.

Agree wholeheartedly. I'm skeptical that the status quo is sustainable in the long-term. I'm certain that perpetual growth in population AND per capita consumption is not sustainable. Just ask the ancient civilizations that collapsed due in whole or in part to mismanaging resources and subsequently, exceeding the carrying capacity of their surroundings - it didn't end well. Something-something about history repeating itself...

[Delayed reply] I agree that making it more affordable to breed is likely the main, or the only, factor that would have much of an impact on birth rates. I neglected to mention that I am solidly on Team 'We Already Have Too Many Humans'. Kind of an important detail to have left out lol. I probably should have also stated that I don't have kids (by choice), if it wasn't apparent (unintentional pun: "wasn't apparent" --> "wasn't a parent"). In an effort to construct shorter comments/replies, I'm f…

Fuck, I already have to pay taxes for schools, but I guess that's better than a society of uneducated dumbasses. Or, rather, even MORE uneducated dumbasses. Nannies & childcare too? GTFOH. Will someone pay more taxes so I don't have to pay for dog food or vet visits? Never mind, I wouldn't have dogs if I couldn't pay for their care myself. Sounds crazy, I know. Breeding...Is...Not...Mandatory

We have enough humans already Infinite growth in a finite system is not possible You've been brainwashed into believing that Growth = Progress & therefore it is our civic duty to produce and consume more and more, year after year Perpetual increases to both population and per capita consumption is not sustainable in the long-term Billions of existing and future humans in less-developed parts of the world striving to attain a similar standard of living to humans living in excessively materialisti…

I always say, don't expect the worst but be prepared for it. A couple things you mentioned (that it seems like she isn't used to being treated well, that she's avoidant of emotional intimacy and vulnerability) could indicate some past experiences that made her insecure and hesitant to let her guard down - it's easy to appear confident and open, but still be somewhat closed off to connecting with others beyond a more superficial level. I'm not saying that's a major issue even if it were the case,…

That would be refreshing - I guess there's a first time for everything. I have never been furnished with sources when I've requested them, on any topic or platform. I interpret that as an admission of defeat; otherwise, I'd think one would be eager to substantiate their claims. You can't just go around stating opinions as facts and not expect to be questioned/challenged, yet here we are...

Well yeah, I know that the intention, as stated above, is "to indicate if the person doing the thing is a woman or a man". My question is why is it important/necessary/beneficial to make that distinction? The only context I can think of are situations with health care providers, where the patient has experienced trauma and does not feel comfortable being examined or counseled by someone of the same sex as their assailant - for example, a man seeking therapy to help him cope with an abusive mothe…

Are we comparing 40 year-olds who are not bachelors or spinsters by choice? To be a valid apples-to-apples comparison, the distinction needs to be made, i.e. single men who don't want to be single vs. single women who don't want to be single. It's interesting that the terminology seems to carry 2 very different connotations - 'bachelors' are often thought of as fun-loving, party dudes and 'spinster' calls to mind a bitter, unhappy hermit. I mean, realistically, why not to just refer to all singl…

Yeah, having "Debate" in the sub name is false advertising. There's a predictable formula, elements of which OP has alluded to, that includes little to no actual debating. No one is going to change their mind or even attempt to see another POV without civil discourse and a willingness to hear each other out, so it becomes an exercise in futility for all involved. Let's break this down, shall we? Post asserts "Opinion A" which we'll assume is along the lines of most posts, airing complaints and c…

LMAO What universe is this where humans really think in terms of "getting" other humans as "prizes"? I'm picturing a carnival where you win some game and are handed a goldfish in a plastic bag. Extending that level of transactional commodification to other humans is a clear indicator to just give up, for a while at least. Pay for "companionship" as needed, human or AI, and it's basically a win-win - base needs are met, and there's one less turd floating around the dating pool. Perhaps in an alte…

I wholeheartedly support your decision to stop trying. Spread the word among all like-minded folk. Stay home, lock your doors, contain the disdain and petulance that have led to viewing other humans as "prizes". Anyone with such a tenuous grip on reality to where they even reduce themselves to a "prize" is doing society a favor by forfeiting the game and exiting the playing field. Dying alone isn't as big of a deal as it's made out to be anyway, and is nothing to be afraid of. Thanks in advance.

Women and girls get told this as well - "How do you expect to get a husband if you don't know how to cook?"; "No man's going to want you if you don't lose/gain a few pounds"; "You're not going to find a decent guy hanging out in bars and bowling alleys"; etc. All things my mom or dad have said to me at some point. They finally gave up after I told them countless times that I don't give a shit whether or not I'm in a relationship, so I have no interest in altering myself or faking who I am out of…

Currently in a relationship with a bi guy, so yes. (S)he is also trans. Mostly into women. I’ve always thought of everyone as just people so if I like someone, I don’t care what gender or sexuality they are, though I’d only ever dated hetero men previously. We’re about the same size so we share clothes & play dress-up & it’s awesome.

In addition to reduced socialization, social media also is a constant reminder of how insignificant we are. In the past, we were limited to a relatively small circle, and it was easier to stand out as a 'big fish in a small pond'. Now it's one massive global pond and we're all just algae. You can be extremely adept at something, or extremely attractive, but a few clicks away are multitudes of other people just as good or better; the message is you're not special or important. I'd imagine that ca…

Humans are just stupid animals, insistent upon breeding indiscriminately whilst the world burns, dooming their spawn to suffer in the dystopian future we will continue to produce and consume our way into. To avoid this particular gene selection mating strategy concern, one can choose to associate with the growing community of non-breeders a la r/childfree & r/antinatalism, where having had a vasectomy increases one's proverbial SMV at a relatively low cost. As a bonus, the expense of having depe…

Gotcha, thanks for elaborating. I should have read more carefully obviously! In that case, hell no, I'm not getting with someone who makes me feel unsafe, regardless of their appearance or net worth, and though I'm sure there are women out there who are into being treated like shit, I've never met one. As I'm sure others have said, you don't always see a person's true character at first while they're on their best behavior, so it could happen inadvertently, and there may be complications when tr…

I had responded to a recent post about this & one of my points was exploring the idea that “bad boys” are perhaps being labeled as such based on an unconventional appearance & aloof demeanor, which by no means equates to being violent or abusive. If he’s a known criminal, then ok, but are most guys running background checks before judging? (I’m not talking about the tiny fraction of women who marry serial killers while they’re in prison). I then speculated that the nonconformist “bad” guys are a…

I think there is a disconnect in the ways men and women experience loneliness that makes it harder for women to empathize. I'm guilty of having dismissed loneliness as a form of weakness in the past, because I felt that being alone is something we just have to accept sometimes, that it's a choice to succumb to loneliness and despair. Also I personally enjoy and often prefer being alone so it was hard to relate - 'What's the big deal? Most people suck anyway. Get a pet. Learn to enjoy your own co…

being reminded of everything you missed out on Meh, it's highly overrated - We're just programmed to think that we have to follow a certain life trajectory that includes finding a partner and breeding. That our lives are not 'complete' unless we fulfill this obligation. That if we're not actively working toward this goal, there's something wrong with us. Ignore this pressure. Many people in relationships or married with children are miserable & envious of those who chose a different path & live …

IDK how much hope can be derived from others' attempts to be optimistic in this and other situations where deep down, we know from experience that it may not be true. At the very least, there's no way that someone offering reassurance can say for sure that you are going to succeed eventually. So these platitudes shouldn't be taken as gospel and grasped onto, when we know that rationally, they're just words and ultimately meaningless. But alas, being disillusioned and giving up gives rise to its …

Thx for the insightful reply. Some further reflection - A comparative difference is that the stakes are much higher when selecting someone with whom to create and raise another human - you're tied to that person for the rest of your life (unless they die first). But you're also up against the clock. I guess the smart thing for a woman to do who is dead set on breeding would be to say 'OK when I hit 30-35, if I haven't found a suitable parenting partner, I'm just going to find a sperm donor and d…

Well, they're similar in that both groups are trying to get something from the opposite sex (when the involuntarily celibate are straight...are there gay/bi incels? Honest question. I'd assume so...), and neither group is having success. It's difficult to explore the thought process of an involuntarily childless woman, as I have never wanted to have kids. I think there are those who know they do or do not want kids, and then there are those who are on the fence, who feel, 'Maybe if I found the r…

I always offer to pay for myself but I don't put up too much of a fight if the guy insists. If the date goes well enough that there will most likely be a 2nd date, I'll say OK you can pay this time but I'll get it next time. Or if there are additional costs incurred on the date, such as Uber rides or an after-dinner bar tab, I'll pick those up. That's how I operate in relationships as well - just alternate who pays, or you-pay-this-and-I'll-pay-that. Never been one to expect the man to pay for e…

When will this come to an end? I hate to break it to you, but I don't think it will, nor do I think it should. It's not motivated by a concerted effort to just 'be more masculine' (or feminine, in regard to men), but rather a disregard for or rejection of what some people perceive as 'appropriate' gender expression. People have steadily gotten more comfortable exercising their freedom to look and act how they choose and less concerned with what other people think. It's the natural evolution of a…

Aside from the occasional exception, I'd say sex does not 'just happen' randomly. However, the only necessary conditions I can think of are that both participants must have deemed each other 'fuckable', and neither is 'off limits', i.e. your best friend's spouse, or your cousin. Within those parameters, anything can 'happen'. I think what's tricky is the transition from 'hanging out' to 'let's have sex'. It can be awkward, which is probably why a lot of people prefer to not be sober. But when bo…

There's a lot to cover here - No, attraction is not misogynistic, nor is men's sexuality. It's normal and healthy for men and women to be able to appreciate beauty in other humans and to engage in a little fantasy in our heads. It's how that desire/attraction is acted upon that determines the outcome. Here I will also point out that misogyny and sexism are not the same thing, though they often go hand in hand. Misogyny is general hatred of women; sexism doesn't require hating women, just conside…

Same, even down to the preference for nerds. I wouldn't necessarily outright reject a super good-looking guy but I would keep my guard up a little more. I'd worry about a hyperinflated ego, a sense of entitlement. Same with super rich guys. I'm thinking to myself, "He could have almost any chick he wants, why would he want me?" Part insecurity, part reality. It might cross my mind that there must be something 'wrong' with him to be single, but realize that the same could be said about me. Then I…

Societal pressure in many cases. Not that people can't make it work - there are many variables, such as work schedules (are they staggered so that one parent is home most of the time?) & support system (grandparents willing and able to babysit for free, for example). I do feel that getting by on a smaller income by decreasing working hours is in the kid's best interest if it's at all possible. Giving a child attention and time is more important than showering them with material things. But many …

Storytime: There's this guy I've been acquainted with, and flirting with, for a while, once a week at bowling league. OK so based on that alone, you can probably assume we're not the stereotypical "cool kids" (nor are we kids - 40's - so past the point of giving a fuck if we're cool or not). I'm more of a 'connection-seeker' than someone who has a 'type', but I do tend to connect more with guys who are intelligent. This person gets it. On a recent post here about standards for a potential partner, I listed that one of mine is someone who will also laugh at the absurdity of life. To quote my now-deceased grandma, “If you can’t laugh, might as well be dead.” Giving no fucks about things that don’t really matter is truly the best way to be happy.

That's the best mindset - just going to enjoy the show, and if you happen to meet someone you have a connection with, even better. That way you're not disappointed (unless the event sucks), nor do you give off a creepy, desperate vibe. Sadly, I found no events in my area (Florida) per a cursory google search, though there do seem to be many enthusiasts. Closest arena is in Vegas. NHRL is in Connecticut. We do have an active midget wrestling scene here though, so there's that.

Yeah I'm not the athletic type either - tried softball, way too much running. Then I tried bowling and found my calling. Robot combat is a great idea. I dig sci-fi and people who are smart and creative and a little competitive, so I'm going to have to check it out. The men-to-women ratio would probably be more in my favor than yours, but it's worth a shot - fewer options but higher probability of compatibility, so it might balance out.

It doesn't have to be pickleball (a relatively new sport that's kind of a combo of tennis and ping pong), but co-ed club sports are a good option, if available in your area. You can join as a free agent and be placed on a team. My local organization has everything from darts to soccer, & ability doesn't really matter. You automatically have the sport in common with everyone on the league. It's an easy transition from chatting during a game to 'hey want to meet up for a bite/drink before the game…

how we should behave So people should limit themselves to only behave in ways that fit stereotypical gender roles? Who's deciding how men and women 'should' behave? Even if it were possible to reach a consensus, the outcome would be a monotonous population where everyone is confined to box A or box B and everyone in each box acts exactly the same. No thanks. The reality is most people are naturally happier within the bounds of gender roles That could be true but there's no way to prove or quanti…

I was skeptical for a long time, & I'm not a big fan of calling it a 'disorder'; it's more of a different array of neural connections, IMO. It's actually beneficial to my job, which involves a lot of multi-tasking and jumping around from one thing to another. I was only diagnosed about 5 years ago, in my early 40's. I agree, and demographics definitely play a part. Having lived my whole life in relatively big cities, though in the southern US, it's been my experience among family, friends, and co-workers that it's much less common to settle down early (before late 20's/early 30's). Myself included, there's usually a combo of serial monogamy and casual hook-ups/FWB's/situationships, & I'd estimate that women have an average of 1 to 1.5 different partners per year after becoming sexually active (emphasis on '…

I'm a neurodivergent GenX woman without a pill affiliation and currently single. I've interacted with a lot of people in my 47 years on this planet, and I cannot make a single generalization about men or women that would apply across the board. Everyone is an individual. That's not particularly helpful to anyone seeking a pill-based 'solution' to their dating woes, as both pills must, by nature, rely heavily upon generalizations when formulating tenets and philosophies. And mother nature laughs all the way to the genetic bank. She gets the highest value men sleeping with, and making babies with, the highest value women. If intellectual capacity is factored into valuation (which it should be), the rate of breeding among stupid people might be surpassing that of 'higher value' folks, as portrayed in "Idiocracy", and the implications are concerning. Makes sense, valid points. In the first scenario, if it's what the woman is looking for in life (provided she is aware of and free to choose other options), I don't disparage or condemn that choice, nor would I if it were a man wanting to fulfill the caretaker role and seeking a partner who could support that arrangement. Whatever works for people. The second scenario does in fact seem risky with a greater chance of the couple growing apart and an odd power dynamic going on, though I'm strugglin…

Just trying to be helpful, by pointing out the futility of investing time & effort in a pursuit that ultimately has no bearing on a favorable or unfavorable dating experience. If it were possible to determine whether women as a whole have high or low standards, how would that information affect interactions and outcomes b/w men & women? I've gotten in many an argument on here with women who very aggressively insist that their attraction to a man is not negotiable, nor will it change. This is what they insist. That's the problem with generalizations; everyone is different. I think, here, a woman can put in some effort and easily make herself top of said guy's fuck buddy list if that's what she set out to do I'm sure it's possible, though maybe not if she's in the 'last resort' category. But even being at the top of the list does…

It's a close call, but I'm going with Friend-Zoned Guy having slightly better odds. Mostly based on my own experiences, but I'll try to quantify it. Women are probably more likely to develop an attraction to a guy friend whom they were not attracted to at first, based on attributes other than physical appearance. Men who have a fuck buddy probably have more than one and probably have a more rigid, solidified 'ranking', mostly based on physical attraction, where if a woman is not at the top of th…

First, I give you a lot of credit for already being aware of the things that come to mind by reading just the title - the importance of balance, the trap of desperation, etc. In fact, your self-awareness may be a better, more reliable guide than any stranger's opinion. The only suggestion I have is to continue to maintain a balance b/w dating and personal growth. Dating can be Priority #1, but it's important to keep growing as a person for your own well-being. OK let me break it down - bottom line: Work done inside the home should be inversely proportional to work done outside the home. If Partner A works the same number of hours as Partner B, they should split household responsibilities, regardless of who earns more. Why? Because partners should value each other's time equally. Otherwise, you're letting your partner's employer dictate the worth of his/her time. Devaluing your partners time based upon how much an employer pays them and subsequently ex…

OK, I'll give it a whirl - Attraction is contingent upon different attributes depending who you ask. Think of all the different niches in porn - one person's "ew" is another person's "hell yeah". I don't think any of us, men or women, can completely control what attracts us to another person. We may have some preferences, but it's difficult if not impossible to force or to deny a connection. It's either there or it's not. But that only applies to those who value a connection above all else when …

So fewer people are getting married - why is that a bad thing? A significant percentage of marriages end in divorce anyway - according to the same source you cited, in 2012, 29% of women and 17% of men were divorced (graph). So if 30% of people never marry, it's not increasing the aggregate number of unmarried people as much as it would appear. I'd speculate that as the % of never-married people increases, the divorce rate will decrease among those who do get married, because they will be less l…

Shit, I care about morals when choosing a fucking dentist. I'm not going to knowingly give my business or my affection to anyone whom I believe to be a fundamentally shitty person by my standards. For instance, I could find a guy extremely attractive all around, but if I find out he's a trophy hunter, it's a deal-breaker. There's just no universe in which I would be willing to fuck someone who kills animals for fun. I think we must consider the conflation of "bad guys" with non-conformists. One …

That's not quite what I was saying - yes, there are inherent structural differences but brain development is also influenced by hormones in the womb & shortly after birth (which is why I said "in part"). Scientific consensus is that chromosomes are the main determining factor, but not the be-all, end-all. A quick search yielded a few sources; my other source being someone with a Ph.D in psychology. https://www.brainfacts.org/thinking-sensing-and-behaving/brain-development/2015/estrogen-and-the-d…

The question was specific to 'your own gender', not the concept of gender in general, so I guess that's why your answer, though relevant, could be said to not directly answer the question. That aside, I agree with most everything you said. While there are some biological differences in brain structure & connectivity depending in part on levels of hormones a fetus is exposed to in the womb, and although approx. 70% of humans are clustered toward one end of the spectrum or the other [per my therap…

Mostly agree. I think a lot of people are looking for something unexplainable, something that makes them want to throw rationality out the window in the name of love and just dive in and hope for the best. It's a giant leap of faith to make for a romanticized version of reality, but if/when you feel it, it's one of the best feelings in the world, so it's somewhat understandable that many folks chase this high of chemistry and connection and ignore their better judgement at times. As far as a cor…

Tough call. Both sexes have advantages and disadvantages. I think I'd do OK as a guy - I'd probably be a nerdy non-conformist. My personality is pretty balanced as far as masculine and feminine qualities. Men are more restricted in what is considered socially acceptable in terms of clothes, hair, shoes, makeup, etc., especially in the corporate world, wher…

I can see where that scenario could happen, but I don't know how often the situation would arise IRL - people usually move on, so the chances of a woman rejecting a guy because he hasn't 'established' himself yet, then trying to get with him years later once he's 'made it' are probably pretty slim, though I'm sure it happens. There's a difference when someone is actively trying to better themselves, and when they've stagnated at a barely-scraping-by level with mountains of debt. You're always ta…

200+ comments - good job reading them all. Figured mine would get buried in no-man's land. As an observation, I don't recall having seen any women on here (or IRL) refer to AF/BB except when questioning their existence. Maybe it's y'all who are pretending that they do exist, IDK. Regardless of who's pretending, the consensus answer to the title question seems to be "No, men should not be offended by an expectation that they can support themselves". It's not offensive to have a minimum standard of being able to support oneself and to demonstrate financial responsibility before investing time and effort into building a relationship, regardless of gender, unless you're wealthy enough & have the desire to be a sugar mama/daddy. Marriage is outdated and overrated. I see a lot of guys on here complaining about how marriage only benefits the woman, then they speak of it as some necessity or requirement, when it's not. It just makes it a pain in the ass to extricate yourself if things don't work out. I've never understood what the point is of entering into a relationship contract. If 2 (or more, whatever) people want to be together, that's all that matters, not some piece of paper.

The "settle down" girl is what women want. They want to be the wife and get commitment from men. Good evening, just stopping by with a friendly reminder that there are exceptions to the above - at least one, as I have zero interest in marriage/being a wife. I wouldn't want or expect a man to fundamentally change who he is, because if the changes are solely for the purpose of dating, he may just be pretending to change; I also would lose respect for a man who has so little conviction that he's willing to easily throw his beliefs aside for another person - that indicates a lack of integrity and a lack of a true sense of self. For example, a guy meets a nice religious girl he wants to date so he starts going to church even though he doesn't actually b…

Nice simple analogy, let's run with it - So assuming a limited number of cool boys, and each cool boy only has 2 hands, that still leaves many girls with no cool boy hand to hold. Is the theory that they just give up, or wait for a turn? Surely there is also a portion of girls who don't fight over the coolest boys because they know the cool boys just want to hold as many hands as possible and no hand is particularly special, or because they just aren't into the 'cool' boys and the huge egos some…

Depends on the person. Personally, I can be happy with or without a partner, but I can't be happy if I'm broke-ass all the time, so based on necessities for survival, my job is more important. But the question is a 'great' job vs. a 'great' partner, which is different. Or does that mean that 25% of men are having sex with 100% of sexually-active women, thereby placing them in the top 25% by quantity? Wouldn't it beg the question of why these top dogs who could presumably have any woman they wanted wouldn't just stick to the hottest 25%? Is the top 25% of men mostly comprised of 'Chad's? Generic answer: I'm sure reasons vary, but if it's a 'struggle' to keep a relationship going, it's not a good fit. Yes, relationships take work, but at some point, the juice ain't worth the squeeze. You can't force something that isn't there. Sometimes we ignore our instincts and misgivings and jump into a relationship that was probably doomed from the start, try to make it work, then realize there's no point in postponing the inevitable. This could stem from clouded judgement due to not wanting…

Agree with all of that. Even when we do our best not to be subjective or have a motive, a subconscious bias can still be present, especially figuring in the oft-questionable validity of online sources - it's not hard to dig up something to support even the most far-fetched theories and ideas. 10-4, thanks for elaborating. This may sound a bit cynical, but I think that when you break it down, there is a transactional element to most human relations where we are all essentially using one another to satisfy a need or want, from things as innocent and benign as staving off loneliness, to borderline prostitution when sex is 'traded' for some form of material gain. The difference lies in whether one values and desires a genuine connection with a real person as much if not more than a retur…

Many folks in relationship discussions on this and similar forums indicate that the individual is not the priority, if they even consider him/her to be an actual person. I'll put you down as a "no" then, which was my hypothesis and seems to be the consensus. Though I would specify "in this context", since there are plenty of topics that can be discussed meaningfully using objectively quantifiable data sets vs. generalizations; however, human behavior on a mass scale is not one where it is feasible to do so. Anecdotes and generalizations aren't inherently bad things; they just need to allow for exceptions. It's framing things that can't be objectively measured or proven (in this context, human behavior on a mass scale) as absolutes that becomes a problem, IMO. It probably would be a bit more palatable if generalizations weren't expressed as absolutes, and included qualifiers like you did ("...most don't") that allow for exceptions. Very well-thought-out perspective. I think this is probably the most challenging issue to address pertaining to transgenderism, even more so than the controversy regarding public restrooms. It is refreshing that discussions tend to remain civil for the most part even when the topic is divisive. I've gained a better understanding of the intent of 'neutrality' among opposing ideologies, and many other insights from the generosity of all the commenters. It might be impossible regardless - the question then arises, how meaningful is a discussion when the average isn't accurate for many (possibly most) individuals due to the nature of averages? For a simplistic hypothetical example, if 50% of men say the ideal 'body count' is zero, and 50% say it's 10, neither half is accurately represented by the average of 5, but the resulting generalization would state that men want a woman with a body count of 5. Same with majorities - take the generalization…

Sources? Biological sex is mostly binary with the small exception of people born with a combination of reproductive organs; gender is not - many people exhibit traits associated with both masculinity and femininity. Your view relies very heavily on generalizations, as many discussions about gender tend to do. Opinions are stated as facts, personal experiences are stated as absolutes. But when expressing a view, I suppose that is acceptable. I don't necessarily disagree with everything you're saying - men feeling invalid is a problem, can't argue there. I have to agree with the "it was already over before the breakup" theory based upon my own history of reluctance to hurt someone's feelings & thus sticking it out after it's run its course.
