I agree with you, but I don’t think you realize the full implication of what you’ve posted. If I, as a man, am rejected by a woman who then proceeds to sleep with a narcissist who ghosts her, I don’t have the option of telling people “That’s fine, she’s probably just shallow and emotionally fucked up and doesn’t know how healthy relationships work.” Now of course that’s exactly what I believe and think in situations like those, because no one else has any control over what I think is true. But i…

This discussion is so cursed because no one bothers to set the terms of the debate beforehand. Is there anything wrong morally with having high standards? No, of course not. Is it shallow, myopic, and worthy of criticism to have high standards that don’t have anything to do with long term compatibility (if you’re looking for a life partner)? Yes, of course it is. The problem with this debate is that what people really want is to either claim that a) having high standards is some kind of injustic…

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. Sorry that happened to you as well, but it’s nice in another sense that others have dealt with this issue successfully too. The other issue I had in my case was that aside from this group leader, it was pretty inconsistent as far as the other volunteers went, so I didn’t really find myself building rapport or camaraderie with anyone; I would rarely see anyone more than once or twice. Many were just high schoolers trying to get some community service hours in, …

Yeah, that was my upper middle class bias showing. I should have stipulated that in my example I was thinking of two people who live in Tribeca and work IB at Goldman. In that scenario I think my example would hold. But overall you’re absolutely right, the average black man is obviously in more physical danger than the average white woman.

Fair enough. I suppose I already categorize HuffPost as garbage so I’m not too surprised this person has some articles there too, but I recognize that they are popular.

You described the feeling pretty well. I find conservative arguments about almost everything to be completely irrational and very harmful...at an aggregate level. But at the end of the day their policies actually make my life in particular *better*, while leftist praxis is bent on making my life *worse* in every conceivable way, even in ways that are contradictory to their own idea of equality of rights. So, it's really hard to care about whatever the conservatives are doing when on top of that,…

That's good to hear. I tried that once but unfortunately didn't enjoy it as much because I was unlucky and had to deal with a rather unsavory person. I was the only man in a group of otherwise all-female volunteers at an animal shelter and our group leader was pretty rude to me in ways she was not with the other volunteers. Everyone else was really nice, so this was just the case of one bad apple, but you know how the saying goes...maybe I'll try again somewhere else

What you say does make a lot of sense. This post was motivated by a larger shift within my moral thinking that's been going on, both political and non-political. It really does seem like morality itself (progressive ideals, when applied to politics) is more or less just a tool for power, at least for the vast majority of people. I won't deny there are some genuinely virtuous people who are consistent about their principles, because I know some of them. But politics in particular is about aggrega…

Is it intersectionality that's the problem? If anything the way I see it the issue is that intersectionality just doesn't go far enough in terms of adding nuance (though probably by design, admittedly). My understanding is that intersectionality basically adds a way to account for the ways in which a black man's experience will differ from a white woman's. The black man is going to enjoy certain privileges that the white woman doesn't on account of his gender and vice versa (e.g. him not worryin…

I don’t agree that not caring is itself hypocrisy, at least in my case. I’m not expecting anyone to sacrifice anything for my sake. I’m already very privileged. Since I expect nothing from people I don’t know it’s consistent for me not to help people I don’t know in turn. I just don’t see a point in sacrificing the privilege I currently have to help people who don’t care about me or protecting my rights/well-being in turn. It’s fine to have a stricter moral standard, but I don’t think mine is in…

I mean, I’m no feminist apologist, but is “YourTango” really one of the most well known journalistic websites in the USA? The “loud minority” response doesn’t work for everything, but this is a pretty textbook case of just some random idiot on a random website that hardly anyone has heard of.

I will say it is unprofessional to comment on anyone’s appearance at work, in my opinion. I would be uncomfortable if a female coworker called me handsome. Calling an innocuous comment like that “misogyny” is a huge stretch however. Yeah if an older man says “that’s cute” when a woman has an idea, that’s misogyny, but anyone with a modicum of social skills know that calling people cute in and of itself usually just means you find them attractive. The pattern you mention does exist though, it’s c…

Genuinely curious, but could you give an example of feminist academia refusing to call it rape when a man is forced to have sex with a woman? I’m really not trying to concern troll, it’s just that my understanding was that there were a lot of reasonable feminist academics who did take men’s issues seriously, it’s just that the double standards happen in practice with people who aren’t particularly educated in the complexities of gender/gender roles and just care about power.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
