I suppose it should be said that the person who stays distracted the longest (though romantic and intimate relationships) is the one that best transcends that incessant feeling of being incomplete. I really see that as the only solution to the problem that Tolle presents here -- unless his point was to abstain from love and attachment. Any thoughts on this?

In this situation I think its important to call her out on the sudden shift in her tone: a simple "oh what, you think you're too mature for me?" would force her to explain herself, and throw her off in what she thought was a frame that she was controlling. A more subdued "you seem thrown by my age" could also work, but I find that a degree of hostility is necessary when facing peoples' presumptuousness -- that is, if you are hoping to win them over.
