So your disagreement is not with their sentiment but with their strategy?

Okay. Agreed. But what about when it’s a shaming tool to shame men/others who might shout “man up” to a man when he is complaining of harassment, or showing weakness?

I think I understand your point but “shaming men for showing weakness” is exactly the sort of thing feminists would like to stop. If anything, I’ve seen more people in this sub complaining/hypothesizing that feminists’ endgame is to ultimately make men more feminine by making them weaker. I think it can be abused and is often used as an anti male justification/demonization. But I don’t think the idea in general is entirely without merit, as this comic would seem to suggest.

I am not a feminist, and more often than not I side with this sub.. Having said that, I think it's a little ironic that this comic is criticizing the use of "man up", when so many in this sub criticize and reject the idea of "toxic masculinity". Seems to me that using phrases like "man up" is one of the things feminists are trying to prevent.

If all masculinity was considered toxic there wouldn't be the need for the differentiation by throwing the word toxic in front of it in the first place. Look, to be honest, that phrase, "Toxic Masculinity" makes me want to gag. It is no doubt used incorrectly and often as a weapon against men by man-hating feminists. But I think there is something to men being harmed by societal norms being thrust upon them (by both women and men). Like, you know, maybe if we didn't often label having close frie…

Eh, sometimes it can be. Sometimes men can be harmed by societal norms too.

lol 99% of men? Where's that statistic coming from? Narnia? Not included in the 99% are all the males who commit suicide, are crippled with depression, violently explode after bottling up emotions for years, drop out of high school, etc. lol at expressing emotion as being "feminine". Those wishing for men to have a healthy amount of expression and emotion without being ridiculed don't see strength as a problem either. You're twisting the argument. And, yeah, it was wrong to demonize men for not …

Did you miss the part where I said there's nothing wrong with kids like Mike? Or the kids who fit the classic male archetype? Are you just ignoring that intentionally? Teaching men to not ridicule those who act differently than the "mans man" type is different than teaching all men to act like girls. It's not demonizing male strength. There's a difference. It's not about demonizing masculinity. From the doc's description: "The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay …

Have you seen it? It's not about toxic masculinity. It's about toxic societal pressures on males to be one way. There's a difference between identifying societal pressures of males to be a certain way and actually vilifying the classic male archetype. You can say "It's cool that Joe likes to play the flute and sing and dance" and also be cool with Mike loving football, and also be cool with Eddie who likes all of those things. The problem is when society says every male has to be like Mike, and …

Your comeback against my clarifying of her comments that you misinterpreted is to bring up a class in australia? Really? I didn't say that nowhere is the idea of toxic masculinity being spread and taught. I said that wasn't what she was saying in this particular thread. You and third wave feminists seem to have in common the complete inability to possess the slightest bit of nuanced thought. I used the example of nurses because that's an example she used. Again, I was discussing a conversation i…

"I think feminism is an ally in this cause" I've agreed with everything you've said in this thread. In a perfect world, the above statement is true. From my anecdotal observations, however, it doesn't seem to shake out that way most of the time. I suppose it's up to both your camp and our camp to not view each others as enemies but rather allies in the cause of equality. This is increasingly hard to do with (loud) idiots on both sides stoking the "us vs. them" fire.

(Assuming she's a woman) She didn't say masculinity is toxic. She said the narrow constraints society puts on masculinity is toxic. Which is not only true but is something this sub rails against daily. "They have no interest going around crying" You realize you're proving her point here, right? You're contributing to the societal pressures on masculinity leading to the under reporting of DV and rape as well as higher arrest rates of men for DV. She never once said boys should act like girls. She…

I used to always think this in Sex Ed and Health class growing up, when they'd go on and on about women trying to look like Barbie and models and how dangerous it is blah blah. I'm sitting there thinking to myself what about the expectation for males to look like Arnold? One time I submitted it in the question box (something at the end of class where you can anonymously ask a question, also the source of much middle school hilarity) because I was afraid to say it out loud, and the teacher basica…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
