That's true but its worth remembering the era where feminism developed - the equal protection clause of the 14th ammendment should have taken care of all this but 100 years later (1960's) women did not have effective equal rights. But we are 50 years past the 60's and there is certainly more feminist emphasis on "more than equal" rights...

My main point is that internal hearing at school or work are not the same as criminal trials so its not reasonable to expect the same rules. Now I'd think a student would be unwise to participate unless the criminal charges are settled.

Schools do get to have rules about things that are also illegal. For example stealing. The consensus here seems top be that MRA wants crim court level protections in school hearings I disagree with that.

But in internal hearings that don't carry criminal charges and where there are civil law remedies, I'm not convinced the that all the protections we provide to criminal defendants are needed. It is not valid to petition government for a redress of grievances which government cannot solve. Government cannot solve social problems. The purpose of law is to punish violations of rights, not control behavior. Agreed. When government attempts to control behavior rather than protect rights, it becomes totalitarian. Among folks familiar with the issues, such sacrifices actually disrupt - but I do think its worth also considering short hand or sound bites for carrying a debate to a larger audience - as politicians from all sides have discovered over and over, the public has a short attention span and respond to sound bites.

Why do you need a word at all? I assume you also feel strongly about justice and fairness and freedom and all them other values. Good points. And I don't generally feel a need a self label. But in public debate, particularly if/when it goes beyond message boards where folks are already involved with the issues, its hard to over-estimate the value of a good sound bite. It would be nice if that were not the case but the public loves sound bites.

Egalitarianism is where it's at. Everyone is to be treated as an equal. Period. This doesn't mean pandering to people not to hurt their feelings, but rather, saying exactly what you mean, and expecting those around you to have the respect to listen. No feelings need to be coddled, no fine lines skirted. Say what you think, we tell you what we think, we reach a consensus, then we make plans, and attain goals. Just quoted for agreement.

I certainly do not use "feminist" on a regular basis to describe myself - but "egalitarianism" seems clunky for regular use - so I would just generally go label-free - that said, a shorter, sound bite friendly word would likely be helpful to move the equal rights discussion beyond message boards.

That is an excellent point. I had never thought about the wiggle room in the term legal equality before. Attempts at "legally enforced equality" , even well meaning ones, can lead us down a dangerous slope that can stifle individual excellence. Enforced equality in college sports spending comes to mind. thanks for pushing me to think about that language.

Hmm.. I'm certainly open to another name - humanist - conveys more and less - the humanism movement has lots of other connections than equality. Equalitarian sounds.. clunky. And it might be years before I mention that I fit the definition I was taught of "feminist" again - it doesn't really come up that often. But a sound bite worthy new term for true legal equality would be useful going forward.

What we have is a decrease in reported sex crimes at the same time consensual sex and pornography became more widely available - in spite of the decreasing stigma for reporting such crime (which should have led to an increase of reports) That does not mean that porn reduced crime.
