American here, so get your salt granules ready. Once a suspect is found guilty a judge can take into account any remorse or lack thereof in sentencing. The threshold of evidence may not be as robust as a murder, but once a murderer is found guilty by the court, their plea of innocence is a failure to show remorse. Harsher sentencing may apply. You are no longer presumed innocent after you have been found guilty. Common sense, I would have thought.

I'm all for appeals, but it shouldn't take that long. People are fucking lazy! And paper pushers are some of the laziest. A decade should be unacceptable. One year maybe two is more appropriate. Without rereading the entire article I've determined by the number of utterances of the word "mum" that they are not from the U.S. So, I was wondering if law enforcement can even request a semen sample from a suspect. I've never heard of it and it seems like asking a lot from someone you're accusing of a crime. Not even talking about self incrimination or having representation present as a minor or adult. Asking for a semen sample seems super weird. Not even because he's 12, but that's weird for an adult. I have a hard time believing this. I can see urine, hair, skin, saliva, and blood samples. But semen? The kid was arrested and put in jail. Even if they were the nicest guys about it it's still terrifying for a 12 year old.
