To some extent. Many of the inmates I dealt with were simply immature or had made poor coping choices. Let's say you had an unexpected bill to pay. You might try to borrow, sell something you own or work overtime. A criminal will think, "Who can I rob?" Faced with the same dilemma they arrive at a dysfunctional option. That is mental illness in a certain sense.

My main point is the punishment should fit the crime so to an extent we seem to agree. I don't think she should get something as light as pre-trial diversion where she stays clean for six months and the charge is dismissed. She deserves a conviction and she should have to do some time. I don't think there are any air conditioned prisons anywhere in the US. What those inmates were referring to was the way the prison was run. Unfortunately that was my experience too. It all boiled down to whether a person was determined as "sane" by the court at the time of the crime. I mentioned this in another answer. But in the federal system we went to great lengths to help these individuals. We had two psychiatrists and 7 clinical psychologists and we spent untold dollars of expensive psych meds. You'd have loved our prison because we just about coddled the mentally ill inmates.

5 years probation and a felony record is not a slap on the wrist. Take a few minutes and read up on what it means. She has to report once a month to an officer of the court. The variables are so numerous that virtually every case would be different. I know young women who chose to have romantic relationships starting as young as 12 with adult men. Sorry Amy but your new special was both disgusting and unfunny. I'm not a prude and I liked her last special. But I only lasted through about 1/4 of the new special before I decided it wasn't so much funny as vulgar. I believe her reviews are bad for these reasons and no other. I don't have evidence but I have heard that research into men with heart disease far out strips that into women with heart disease. Maybe that's why they have it. More likely though, someone wants to make money and it is a bandwagon they can get a lot of people to donate to. Charitable organizations keep 25-50% of what they take in for "administration".
