She said she felt disappointed that they ever bothered to reveal ANYTHING about the protagonist. For her, the experience seems to have been revolving around the protagonist being a placeholder upon which the player projects his/her personality, and giving this placeholder any identity just ruined the sense of immersion in this fantasy world that she was enjoying so much. Obviously a man isn't going to comment on this because, for us, it wouldn't ruin the immersion at all, and for the same reason…

Issues of gender, sexuality, and race all deal with the same oppressive power structures that only arise when people are unaware of their own natural, inborn tendencies to single out those who are different in order to strengthen our own sense of identity, both as individuals and as a community. Philosophical movements that attempt to address these issues of inequality tend to focus on introspection, self-analysis, and micromanaging one's own habits and attitudes (and, to a much lesser extent, t…

Now I didn't play Dishonored so I don't have much of a place to criticize the criticism but I will say that I always find it ridiculous that anyone thinks they can tell creators what to do with their creations. It doesn't matter what you think should or shouldn't have happened, the creator(s) made what they made for a reason and if that doesn't appeal to you go find something that does OR create something yourself. Dude. You just posted your opinion of how this writer should have written her art…

No, I think you're just looking for some emotional gratification. You want some harsh words to give voice to your negative emotions like anger and shame. Catharsis is great and all, but she's trying to change minds. You have to be gentle when addressing opposing viewpoints on such an emotionally charged topic. If you don't, you just activate people's defense mechanisms, which destroys any chance you may have had of working around their emotions and actually helping them use rational thought to d…

The system, huh? In some countries, the system says that women are still property, must be stoned to death for any sex outside of their arranged marriage, and when they're hold down a pubescent girl and cut her up without anesthetic, so that not only will she never experience an orgasm, she can't even have sex without excruciating pain (but is nonetheless legally bound to pleasure her husband), it's legally allowed because it's for her own good, and the good of society. NAFALT, NAMRAALT. It's no…

WHOA, hold on a second! I'm against all forms of forced genital mutilation, but until a couple of hours ago I thought that all FGM rendered the recipient unable to have sex without horrible pain, and that the only long-term physical consequence of MGM was having to use lube all the damn time. If that were really the case, even though both are violations of fundamental human rights, the female variety would clearly be worse. I'm sure I'm not the only one who had a distorted view of the "facts", s…

I was trying to discourage any assumptions, though. People do crazy shit when intense emotions are involved, and we don't really know OP or his wife, or what they may or may not have together. I mean, three years and she's never made threats before, I see no reason to assume that she's abusive. Again, imagine discovering that your husband was secretly, I dunno, a racist or something, and all the reasonable opinions he's expressed to you were just his way of tricking you into giving him what he w…

Oh shit man, I was just gonna post about why, even though I'm not a feminist or a woman, I find it equally offensive, and then I saw this post, which led me to look up this article on Wikipedia. If you've only heard about the absolute worst shit, you're gonna jump to conclusions like I did. So, y'know, don't. :P Relevant quote from aforementioned article: The WHO defines Type I FGM as the partial or total removal of the clitoris (clitoridectomy) and/or the prepuce (clitoral hood); see Diagram 1B…

Get educated and stop repeating lies. Thanks for pointing out the hole in my understanding, but the onus is on you to provide the data to the unaware. Don't complain about laziness, accept it and deal with it. Most people don't have the amount of time on their hands (and/or the motivation) to look this shit up for themselves, and they're exactly the ones who need to be led through this shit by the hand. Actually, I don't think that is only the reason. FTFY? I think it is because feminists deliberately seek out and cherry pick any outbursts from that minority to use them to represent the whole movement. Not only that, but they actively work to misrepresent even the most moderate and fair voices (e.g. Warren Farrell, Glenn Sacks--men who sometimes bend over too far backwards to be fair) falsely portraying them as misogynist extremists. People who lap this up without any critical thinking display …

Anyway, after a heated, vitriolic series of fights, she threatened to initiate divorce proceedings if I ever brought up an MR argument or even got caught reading /MR again. In my experience, when you push an issue that's this heated, without taking adequate time to let the emotions cool, both parties get pretty damn far from reasonable. Emotions fuck with people pretty bad sometimes, especially when they feel that something really important to them is being threatened.

Sounds like she's only seen the vocal minority of misogynists, who happen to scream louder than the rest of us, and judged us prematurely. Also, sounds like these fights have been escalating, and emotions are getting the better of both of them. Initiating divorce proceedings so soon would probably just escalate the tension even more, which has a really high chance of fucking both of them over and losing something that might actually be really good. I'm sure that this is the case, but I am sure t…

Before you jump to any conclusions, step back for a second: She really does think that the vocal minority of misogynists in the MRM represent the entire movement, probably because they scream the loudest. Her first impression was of these screaming retards, so she doesn't even know what the rest of us are in this for. She thought she knew you, now she thinks you're a radical misogynist (or in danger of becoming one). She feels betrayed by someone she loves dearly. It feels, to her, like your who…

I stopped being influenced by people's perceptions once I realized that you can't get arrested for acting weird, you have to actually commit a crime first. :P Still sucks that people are so afraid of absolutely everything that is different, though. I try to destroy people's negative assumptions in any way I can, usually by just being a calm, friendly guy to people who look at me with distrust. It's fun to see the look on their faces when they realize they were jerks for judging me. :)

When people don't take the precautions necessary to protect themselves, it's likely because they weren't properly educated on the risks and the proper way to manage those risks. Both parents should've laid the groundwork early on to make sure that their child knew that their unique stores of knowledge and experience were something they could trust, and they should've spent their time, from the moment they realized they wanted to have kids, building their skills and self-knowledge so that they co…

If it wasn't for those kinds of attitudes, my dad might've actually gotten the help he needed when he was abused so many decades ago, and he wouldn't be such an hateful prick to everyone he was close to. Might've done the things he wanted to with life, instead of stewing in his own hatred and pushing everyone away as he continues to do. So yeah, I owe my shitty childhood to that man-up bullshit.

Why not do the same with every crime? Y'know, if we had a poster campaign that gave people rational reasons to not hurt each other, other than dire consequences for themselves, it could actually make a difference. I mean, shit, it hasn't been tried before, to my knowledge. Maybe it could work.

I never said otherwise, I was just presenting myself as an example that being rational and even well intentioned doesn't necessarily have to disagree with a desire to conquer and destroy. I never meant to imply that I was representative of the whole of humanity, just that I'm not alone, either.

You ever met a rape victim? They're usually emotionally vulnerable as FUCK. Saying something like that just increases the chances that they'll fucking kill themselves or something, or increase the amount of time it takes for them to stop having fucking flashbacks and anxiety attacks. Advising a woman to wear pants instead of a skirt when she goes out is a far cry from blaming a rape victim. Once that shit is done, you pick up the pieces, you don't EVER fucking say "duh, I told you so". Fuck... A…

Thanks, it was on the tip of my tongue! :P (that's what she said :D) Since this is deep enough in the thread that going off topic won't matter, I actually find videos of actual couples making love (or fucking like animals) to be way better than any other kind. Almost 3% of men reported forced sex and 22% reported verbal coercion in a romantic relationship in the last year. Almost 2.3% of women reported forced sex and 25% reported verbal coercion. From: Predictors of Sexual Coersion. Since this campaign seems to be about date rape, this is the only statistic you quoted that's relevant to this particular discussion, and it's more than sufficient. I think about forcing myself on them, then and there, or tying them up or drugging them, or... any number of things, really, but again, I don't actually have a strong desire to cause pain, just to get what I want using brute force. Since I've taken the Bodhisattva vow, actually doing any of that (outside of role play with someone who already desires such an experience for reasons other than simply pleasing me) would go completely against the grain of who I am and who I feel I must be. I really don't think it says what you think it does. You've interpreted it one way out of many, and I think you're really reaching. To quote myself from another post here: The statistics seem to suggest that, while most men are not rapists, most rapists are men. It makes sense, then, that most of the ads would be directed at men, but it's also true that the campaign really could use some less conventional pairings and perspectives. All the men are bigger than their girlfriends, for example, and …

It doesn't say that. That picture is a strawman argument, and I'm just slightly insulted that I, as a rational man who has no god except reason, am expected to fall for it. I'm not saying men don't get demonized, I'm just saying that this ad isn't an example of that. I've put it much more succinctly in other posts in this thread, but if I quote myself any more I'm gonna hate myself for spamming.

Dude, I try to be as rational as a human can possibly be, and I think about rape plenty. Everyone still has an irrational side that they have to reign in for the benefit of the people whose lives they touch. It's not something I'll ever act on, though. I've seen first hand what it's done to my friends and family who were unlucky enough to experience it, and it's really not the kind of legacy I want to drop on the world. I'm an anarchist, and I laugh at absolutely everything, because if I didn't, the weight of it all would crush my fragile little spirit, and I would weep bitterly and regularly. As for this comic, it's not intentionally homophobic. She was implying that women are crazy, not homosexuals. She actually gave props to hetero men and lesbians for being able to put up with it. This is ad hominem. Attack the ideas if you think they're wrong, but attacking the character of the person you're debating DISTRACTS from the idea that is being debated. You don't matter, he doesn't matter, I don't matter. Only the ideas we express, and how well we express them. That's why the internet is the amazing vehicle of enlightenment that it is: anonymity. Rational debate usually ends in both parties walking away with a more balanced viewpoint. The shit you're pulling usually ends in one or both parties being pulled away in an ambulance/squad car. Someone caused you and your loved ones great pain. Hating people who have things in common with those who have hurt you in the past may be a natural reaction, but realizing that a person's declared allegiances can be very different from their true alignment, and that everyone is different (no matter what they say) is a very important part of becoming a fully matured human being.
