Okay, but you initially expressed an interest in debating me, then disengaged without really addressing my points when it started to sound familiar. I think it could have been productive. Seeing as you've heard these kinds of criticisms a lot, is there anything on AVfM or elsewhere you could point me towards?

I might have learned a few things you are not aware of. That's probably true, but it's kind of a lazy way to defend yourself. I can see that you're growing. I wish you'd train your growth more towards activism. You're welcome.

I'm getting the sense that you wrote the article. I hope you don't take any of what I'm saying as a personal affront. A person doesn't have to be "imbalanced" to be swayed by an inflammatory text. We're emotional. Sexual politics (if I must :P) get hairy sometimes. The concern isn't that the mentally unhinged are going to go postal because you coined the term bitch machine; what's worrying is that you're potentially drawing in men who for whatever reason have some sort of gut feeling that women …

Well, I do care. Ok, you asked for it then :) Do you ever worry that it's resonating for the wrong reasons? If a feminist writes an article detailing her horrible treatment by her partner, shares some folksy wisdom on male violence and ends up convincing her readers that all men are scum, is that a win for feminism? I guess I feel like it cheapens the movement. Actually, I feel like it borders on dangerous. I'm hoping here that we can agree on the fact that gender-focused activism attracts some …

I think it is pretty objective. I guess this all seems self-evident to you, but imagine you're someone who hasn't observed this pattern before. The article (anecdote + disney + princess paraphernalia + cosmo = bitch machine) is hardly scientific. It's clear that the author (and presumably you) have long been convinced that women are more immature than men. Why shouldn't I dismiss what you've observed as biased? What makes your experiences any less subjective than mine? I'm pretty sure if I expla…

It might be worth considering that people are more likely to notice stuff that confirms what they already believe or suspect.

Are you sure you don't mean some kind of mad insanehouse? (I mosty responded to this comment because WHAT'S UP, I'M FROM OTTAWA TOO. Although not a developer.)

Ontario is a big place. Without knowing the city he's in, I would suggest calling or visiting one of the women's resource centers/hotlines/shelters and asking where to go for help.

I'm Canadian. You mean gummy worms?

OP never said he can't talk about his politics, just that he doesn't want to. That's a choice that plenty of people make in their interpersonal relationships (religion and money too). Why so trigger-happy with the abuse claims?

I don't think I've ever watched an episode of Dr. Phil without getting at least mildly pissed off at his take on things. The guy is a sanctimonious quack.

I can admit that it's possible, sure. I still think it's a bad comparison, if only because AIDS will eventually kill you. It's the only outcome. I appreciate that you made the western distinction. In some places rape accusations carry very little weight and being HIV+ is pretty much criminal.

The course the disease took for him is far from typical. (Also having HIV doesn't make you a rich and famous athlete, so your comparison's a bit off)

Here are the problems I see with your argument (sorry for point form but it's late here): -Comparison I was referring to was between actually getting AIDS and being accused of rape; I didn't comment on how they occur or how well you can protect yourself from either. Sorry if that wasn't clear. -Being accused of rape != being charged. If you get AIDS, you have AIDS. -Distrust and fear are pretty common reactions for people with AIDS too -AIDS will kill you.

I'm sorry but I have to say: really? I think the reason you never thought of it like that is because it's a pretty fucking ridiculous comparison.

'cause there's no way stereotypes can persist when they don't reflect reality for most people! Especially not in a fairly insular community!

Uh...I don't think people who molest kids/teens do so because they wouldn't otherwise be able to get laid.

That tit for tat attitude just escalates conflicts, I think. Unless you're actually looking for a fight, it's much better to either restrain the person if you have the ability or just remove yourself from the situation. If you can't do either, well then, yeah...self defense.

Cripes on a bike, is there really a need for debunking these things? Who doesn't already know this?

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
