I can't really comment from a US point of view because I know things are harder there compared to where I live. However I feel if you are passionate about it you can make it. It's going to be frustrating as it's a lot of exams, checks, studying and studying... I would say doing an airline sponsored or self payed cadet program is the easiest and quickest way up there these days. I think it's just the modern world we live in. Firstly anyone other than Flight crew may not enter the flight deck . Yes even cabin crew cannot enter the flight deck unless the csprain asks them to come in. When the cleaners clean the plane there has to be a supervisor in the cockpit because anyone can leave anything that could harm us etc. No no new pilots do not require cover pilots at all.
