I noticed I was treated better by women in general when I was in a relationship. Suddenly women who were previously distant were more friendly. Maybe it's just a basic economics thing, everyone wants what's in demand.

As a man, I also find it inappropriate to cold approach most places, or at least awkward. People keep saying, just go up to random women at the grocery store. Uhhhh....if they're shopping with a large cart full of food, there's a fairly large chance they're married with a family. It's a total gamble meeting single women there. Imo, your case is different, knowing them for decades is an established friendship. Keeping up with exes is more of an issue for me if it's someone they broke up with within a few years of us dating, and still insist on messaging them regularly. I was in a situation where my then gf(first gf ever) insisted on staying in touch with her exes, and it wasn't a good feeling.

I guess Im too much of an awkward weirdo, but Ive literally never approached a woman in a public place about anything other than directions if Im hopelessly lost. Im always a bit surprised to hear these stories.
