I read that piece three times because I didn’t see any mention of the MIL or a friend who had to excuse himself because of his laughter. Was the story edited after the fact? It frustrating to read responses that don’t match the original accounts.

My male divorce lawyer quoted that to me. So right.

And impeccable judgement.

I was married to a plastic surgeon for twenty years and I certainly thought of myself as the girl next door. But, I was young then and didn’t have a lot of wrinkles or other issues that plastic surgery can help resolve. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve almost become addicted because a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. But I also know that too much radical plastic surgery can ruin your face and body and I’ve met plastic surgeons who are smart enough to tell me when enough is enough.

I didn’t take it personally at the time. It has grown in my mind as I’ve matured.

A very long time ago when I taught home economics in the public school system, I volunteered to help judge cheerleading tryouts. I sat next to a male math teacher during the judging and he apparently looked over at my scoring sheet. As the tryouts progressed he said to me, “it’s interesting how differently I score than you.” Of course the implication was that because I taught a non-stem course, my standards were much lower than his. It obviously stuck with me over the years. I wonder where he is…

This also perfectly describes a narcissist.

It’s way beyond media and fashion. Remember “Dance Moms”? That reality show was the exploitation of prepubescent girls in tiny costumes exposing their bodies. I don’t recall any complaints about the sexualization of young girls at that time. And, having three young granddaughters who are encouraged by their parents to take cheerleading classes instead of music lessons or joining soccer teams. And children’s pageants a la Jon Benet Ramsay that reward even younger girls with trophies and prizes fo…

I’m dating a 77-year old guy (yes, he still breathes) and he works out 2 1/2 hours a day and hasn’t gained a pound in 40 years. He also dresses to the nines and looks fantastic. I know it’s rare and I wouldn’t have even considered dating him if he was bald with a big belly and droopy skin. He’s amazing. He’s devoted so much time and care into his appearance that I really appreciate his devotion. Any guy over 30 who polishes his shoes is my hero.

OMG. Much more serious than I assumed. Thank you for that very thorough explanation. Creepy. Deeply creepy.

I just can’t see any value in it at all. If you have to cheat to see legs and maybe someone’s slip, how big of a loser can you be. And it’s not a power play if the victim isn’t even aware of it.

Then it’s a lame power play.

This is so stupid. What kind of pictures do you get from that vantage point? Nothing worth looking at. Lame, like a 12-year old boy. OMG.

Boomer here. I think what we’re talking about here is not just the decline in many men when it comes to personal grooming habits and the notion that women are second-class citizens, but a generalized decline in both genders when it comes to quality characteristics. When I was a little girl, it was unacceptable for girls and women to dress in jeans or anything besides dresses and skirts. Until I was in college in the late 1960s, girls wore dresses or skirts to classes and basically anywhere in pu…

I hope the pay was commensurate. I endured those things from my husband with no pay check. I admire your strength.

That’s funny. Within the last few days I have met someone I seem to like. Now I read my own mantra and don’t feel quite so empowered. But I will try.

Hahahaha. I don’t even remember making that comment. I’m not sure what I was thinking about but it appears there’s some cynicism there. No, I haven’t met Anyone yet.

I promise this to myself daily even though I haven’t met him yet. “You have to make me love you. You have to make me trust you. The ball’s in my court.”
