What's keeping you in a relationship that goes against your values?

I agree, and I don't think gentle parenting is in opposition to wanting boundaries and structure

I feel like there is a pretty big misunderstanding in the culture at large about what gentle parenting means, it's not letting your kids walk all over you, that is permissive parenting. Gentle parenting prioritizes helping kids learn healthy coping mechanisms for their emotions while also helping them learn appropriate behavior. The ideal is to help them learn how to do this without shaming them. A helpful person in this space is Dr. Becky. She wrote the book Good Inside which is a wonderful rea…

I have no idea what is going on in this comment, can you add some context?

Have you heard of situations where it isn't capped?

It has nothing to do with men vs women at this point. The person who makes more will feel like they are losing, but the person who stayed home will have lost out on years of career building. No one wins in a divorce, it is immature and shows an inability to see nuance to argue that one gender comes out on top across the board.

Yes, plenty of men want children because they want to be a dad and involved in raising them

I don't think I understand what you mean by fight to maintain the system.

This is the difference between lifestyles available to people based off of where they were born, not women types of women.

But do you really think women want to stay with patriarchy? It is not beneficial to women to not have control over their own lives. Also, being able to live off of one income is a problem for everyone, not just women.

Can you explain more? I don't really understand how it would be the same as not all men. Has this been your experience with other men as well? It hasn't been my experience

Yes that's exactly how the subconscious mind works. You don't do it on purpose, brains look for familiarity

What do you know about the affects of growing up in trauma and how that affects brain development and the relationship dynamics you are naturally drawn to due to that? Because it sounds like you know very little with that kind of opinion.

Your experience is your own, you are entitled to it. And so are others. Your response seems to come from a black and white view of the world that is involved in the competition of who has it worse. I don't think that it is a helpful approach to the very real problems that people are dealing with. There is a lot of pain and confusion and despair on both sides. The problems that each gender deals with are very different and the systems we live in contribute to that. How do we address these issues …

Okay I finally see the point you are making! I think the nudge to focus on yourself and bring that to the table in dating is great advice. And I agree, one of the difficult parts of dating is sifting through a lot of people who aren't compatible to find the few who are, and hopefully the ones who have also taken the time to heal and self reflect.

But how, so if there is a person who grew up with childhood trauma and they are inclined to play that out in a toxic relationship then that means 'quality' men can't have them? Or like that sucks for the women because they miss out on their 20s? I think that people who have to overcome these issues in adulthood will find meaning in more than the superficial worry of who is valuable. It is more about finding a collaborative partnership.

This is why I'm confused. I don't totally understand how this relates to my original comment.

What men are you referring to?

I feel like I can't wrap my head around this. So if a woman is attracted to toxic relationships, it's worse when she is older than 30? Or are you saying that women who were attracted to toxic relationships in their 20s but figure it out by their 30s have a harder time dating now?

I am not seeing the correlation between this and doing the self work required to be in a healthy relationship which can happen at any age

Is it just women? I'm inclined to think that this is a human issue
/r/PurplePillDebate12/04/24 02:38 PM

Yes, exactly. You totally get it. Most women don't understand this, and all of the repercussions of this. EVERYTHING follows from this. Why do you think most people don’t understand the dynamics that are playing out at a societal level? Is there a human instinct that keeps us blind to this both in our personal relationships and the world at large? How can we accept this part of ourselves and work with it? In negotiation, he (in this case, she) who wants it less, wins. The following is how most h…

Yes I agree. There is a false sense of value that can happen at the beginning of a toxic relationship that keeps you hooked. Once you can identify that and value yourself then most likely you will find a partner who is more healthy and balanced.

I do not doubt that the things you mentioned are very difficult in dating from a guy's perspective. I can sympathize with that. It kind of reminds me of the idea that the lower desire partner automatically controls the amount of sex that the couple has simply by default of the system they are living in. It sucks to be the HD partner and want something that you can't always control. It can also be hard to be the LD partner because you didn't ask for the control. Is either one at fault due to this…

If a woman is attracted to toxic men she probably needs to self-reflect on what part of her is drawing her into that dynamic. Not all women do this, but many do for many reasons such as modeling from parental figures and brain wiring while young as well as societal and cultural influences etc. Men who are attracted to toxic women need to self-reflect in the same way. What kind of person are you hoping to date and what kind of relationship do you want to create? What can you self-reflect on to se…

My take is that women and men have very different standards that they have to live up to and both are hard for different reasons. What do you think?

I'm curious where your opinion came from? What experiences and online reading has you thinking this?

I don't think it is black and white. There are a lot of factors and cultural influences and societal shifts that have gotten us to this place. Can we acknowledge that women have good reasons for being skeptical? Yes. Can we also acknowledge that men who don't deserve it are living with the consequences of men who take advantage? Yes. Our society is structured in a way that places men and women into roles while dating. There are hard things to deal with on both sides. There are immature people ac…

People get together for all sorts of reasons and it's usually for solving a need within ourselves. The cool thing about marriage/relationships is it helps us grow past this. If someone 'settled' and the other person agreed to the relationship then they now have the opportunity to use that situation to grow up and create something great together.

I think immature people don't see others as full humans and use the lens of needing validation from others to feel okay. It's a kind of use that many people do. The way out is learning how to validate yourself.

I think that we all deal with insecurities about our lovability and worth. The natural part of growing up is learning that these types of frames don't matter. There's no way out of the misery if you continue to ascribe to this mindset. A true and loving partnership is not easy to create but very rewarding. It allows space for people to have faults and limiting beliefs, but you have to be willing to do the work to own your piece of the dysfunction we all bring to the table and co-create in any re…

Does there have to be a villain in these conversations? Is it one person's fault? Or does society allow us to play out these dynamics due to the way it's currently set up?

Aren't human brains wired to be drawn towards physical attraction? It's the act of getting to know someone that allows us to see someone as a whole human. How do we cultivate more in person encounters to get past that initial stage?

An interesting fact, 150 years ago women were considered to be more sexual than men in some parts of the world, it's so interesting how our culture can change and affect our viewpoints. It sounds like you are trying to talk yourself into this but you aren't happy with it. Something I've learned is that it's okay to hurt people's feelings. He will recover and so will you. I think it might be more important to look at your tendency to downplay your own needs for someone else. Any thoughts on why y…
