VW Golfs are excellent cars, and the blue motion range is one of the most economic motors on the market (on an episode of top gear they drove one about 800 miles on one, tiny, tank of fuel). A V8 is more economic than you might think though- I drive a Mercedes clk 3.2 v8 and I get about 40mpg because the engine never goes over 2000rpm around town.
