If the rental yields are low in your area, why don't you invest your savings and use the dividends to pay for the rent? The $600K price is only the real price if you pay cash. If you can rent the same place at a 3% yield and find investments (a REIT fund for example) returning 6%, you only need to save up $300K to rent the $600K house forever. I also left Belgium. Let me put it this way: Out of the top 5 people from my university class, 80% emigrated - most of them to London to work in the city. Nobody who has ambition stays in Belgium. Small market, extremely high taxes. But there is no capital gains tax though, so you can retire there.

I'm from Belgium and would like to remind everybody that this law comes from politicians from the crazy socialist south of the country. Where I'm from, Flanders, the culture is still politically incorrect enough for comedians and TV shows to laugh at women and minorities regularly. This is one of those laws they'll never enforce because it will culturally divide Belgium even more and the establishment wants to keep it all together.

So basically society will be stratified into two classes: The upper class where the father had the foresight and monetary ability to arrange his marriage in such a way that the mother of his children could not destroy it. Kids grow up successfully if not a bit overprotected, off to the Ivy League when the time comes. The under class where the baby daddies get raped financially and the kids grow up to be criminals.
