If the title and the body of the question are at odds in your eyes, that's an issue for you to resolve. I think love is an inborn behavior and like you say we impose on it all these structures like patriarchy and social norms which mislead us into negative action. Yes, you were motivated to act better because of your interest in this woman, but not consistently so, and this is certainly not the case for everyone. The times you "played it cool" had a negative impact on her, whether or not you realize it, and would be reason enough to not enter a relationship with you if that had been an option at the time.
