That's a fair question. For me alcoholism isn't just a volume or amount. It's a drive for that drink and when I start not stopping even when I know I had had enough. To directly answer the question, I can drink 12 12oz beers at 5%abv in an evening after work. I think for me it's not the amount but the fact that I always found a reason. I would convince myself that I'd just have a few. There was no harm in it this time. I'll let up tomorrow. Good thing happened, celebrate! Bad thing happened, it'…

That's a great observation. I've been in therapy unraveling a mess. I'm not going to trauma dump but I will say external factors coupled with the wrong coping mechanism has been my greatest downfall. I do feel like I'm to the point I can quit and honestly I believe this divorce will help long term. Being able to conclude a chapter of your life where you were holding on to hope for something that was never going to happen is a painful blessing. If alcohol hadn't been the reason it eventually woul…

Already working on the alcohol. Marriage is over. There is no future us.

I totally get that! It's exciting and scary at the same time.

Stay strong brother! Hopefully in time you'll land happier, healthier, and if you want someone to share your time with!

That's rough. Is there any way she might be willing to go to marriage counseling? I know some disagree but I feel like once that's exhausted that you can walk away knowing you did everything to make it work. Additionally, it may help to seek counseling by yourself just to help sort out your feelings. Any possibility she's going through a mid-life crisis? I'd never advocate staying in a marriage "for the kids". It seems altruistic but it never works that way. The kids see the flaws and oxymoronic…

I agree with the suggestions to take time to heal and get yourself in order before jumping back in to the scene. You're pretty young, I know 21 isn't 15 but you still have a lot of parts of you that you still have yet to discover, and sometimes it's hard to know when you're also trying to be in a relationship. I was married at 17 and know this from personal experience. Document anything abusive your ex continues to do. Behavior of this kind is unacceptable regardless of gender. The stalking and …

It's not about me. It's about all of us. Please be well and if you need anything feel free to PM me. I'm not on here all the time but at least several times per day.

Hard to say for sure. In my case I think we were both less than happy but I could endure. She couldn't. I do believe it'll be tough but in the long term I'm probably going to be happier. She will too. That's a bitter truth. I hope to look back on my marriage with fond memories but also with the realization that ending it was for the best and my life since was happier.

You're right on all points. The idea of making new friends daunts me horribly! Part of the therapy I'm going through will hopefully allow me to build new interpersonal skills I didn't develop due to very frequent moving as a child. I just quit trying to make friends and if I did when we moved I just cut and run. But you know what? I'm trying. Facing my past and what it's done to me hasn't been easy but I refuse to allow fear to make decisions for me. Thanks for the encouraging words!

Thank you for the great suggestions. I'm in therapy and will be working on processing all of this. I agree that it's essential for me right now! I indeed need to reconnect with my hobbies. I've been really in to electronics, robotics, and 3D printing but never seemed to find the time to do projects I wanted. I guess now is the time!

Oh, no, it's going to be very lopsided in favor of her. I know there's people probably screaming out loud after reading that but I'm doing it on purpose. I own two houses, neither worth very much. I'm selling one and giving her all the proceeds. She is moving out and I keep the one we're living in now. She is driving a 2019 Ford Fiesta that I'm going to keep paying on for her. I'm letting her keep whatever appliances / furniture she wants. I'm also keeping all of the debt. I have no retirement o…

For what it's worth, I believe your divorce is inevitable. My strategy would be to get out of it as cleanly as possible. Work on yourself, get the therapy you need. It sucks. I'm going through it now too. Just be sure whatever you do you can look at yourself in the mirror and be happy with who looks back. I hope that's not too cliche or whatnot. I sincerely hope you can navigate this and look back in years to come as the time your life turned for the better.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
