You said "work IS energy" but your source says "work is energy transferred." Those statements are meaningfully different. All I'm trying to say is, any work you do in the physical world is a conversion of energy (e.g., from the calories you ate for breakfast) into physical force (push, pull, etc.) applied to matter.
