In history, what convinced people to give up cruelty (such as slavery or torture) was the realization that themselves or someone they like could be the victim of it. I think this is what we are seeing here.
I mean look at the bright side, this is a change for the better. Whatever the reason, folks are saying that we should give "innocent until proven guilty" a try.
