1	Why is circumcision not considered genital mutilation? Female circumcision also has profound cultural and religious significance in many places. By definition male circumcision does inhibit normal sexual function because normal sexual function requires the foreskin. Male circumcision took off in America as a way to reduce masturbation and sexual activity because it was believed circumcision reduces sexual pleasure (which it’s now known to do). Circumcision reduces the risk of illnesses that are already very rare in intact males, it causes a scar that encircles the penis, and it removes 1/3 of the sensory nerves on the penis and causes hyper-keratinization and further desensitization of the glans leading to permanent nerve damage and loss of penile sensation and a reduction in sexual pleasure.
