What they mean by that line is during a relationship they're more likely to pursue others who they find attractive (based on the paper and its citations) It sounds a bit more like what you're saying but contextually means different. Hope that clears things up

There are methods in psychology that can tell us whether what people say predicts what they do or have done, or trick them into telling us that, which have tested against objective scenarios of say vs do multiple times (as in where we can see what one has done separate from what they said they did) to establish them as good methods for this purpose. Its not always feasible or ethical to get certain information. But that doesn't make psychology bunk in itself.
