When I was looking at houses after my divorce, a friend told me that I should look at condos instead, because “having your own house will probably be too intimidating to most guys.” Yeah, and none of those “most guys” are ones I wanted anything to do with.

Right?! This is the fucking truth right here.

I hadn't been truly single for more than two months from the time I turned 18. When I left my marriage, I spent 8 months single. And in that time I realized that I could actually be alone because I am the only one I really need. I'd spent so long thinking that I needed someone else to feel whole but it took a lot of forced time alone and self-reflection and hard work to understand that I am more than enough. And I believe that the reason I am no in a relationship with a HVM is that I knew I didn…

I finally left my not-yet-physically-abuse relationship when I felt like he was about to hit me, and I was so relieved. "Finally, he's going to hit me, and then I have a good enough excuse to end the relationship!" Because he raised his fist at me. I'd previously hoped he would hit me, but it had never got to the point that I really thought it would happen. That shift is what made me leave. The escalation was finally obvious enough that I knew it was going to happen soon. I left the next day.

Yup. Can confirm. Expected to make the money, take care of the house, figure out food, and then still (somehow?) initiate sex. ??

My BIL. The first time I met him, I knew, and I told my sister. And he's never made me doubt that he's a HVM. Works his ass off, helps his friends and family and never expects anything in return, loves my sister and their kids and his family (and our family). Has friends and hobbies and is like...honestly, one of those people that everyone just likes. He radiates goodness, he laughs easily, he cares deeply. When I finally left my ex-husband, my BIL was the standard I measured against when decidi…

My ex tried to get me back by talking about how he didn't have anything without me, he needed me back, I had to help him, he couldn't do it without me... Like, literally offered nothing in return. Just "I literally have nothing if I don't have you." Doesn't that mean that I have everything even when I'm by myself?

The difference is whether a woman is childfree or just hasn't had kids yet. If you meet someone or are looking at a profile for a "childfree/does not want kids" woman, don't send a message. If a woman doesn't want kids, she doesn't kids - bio or otherwise. If your argument is about "Well I don't even have them very often, they're not a big part of my life," that's a massive red flag to any HVW. It speaks to character - and it would be a mark against. A father should be involved in his children's…

I have experienced truly great casual sex at points in my life. It was always just a means to a horny end. I don't regret it. Do I prefer that to incredible sex with a loving, attentive partner? No. In those moments, was the bit of human connection more fulfilling that a vibrator would have been? I think so. But who knows?

In a pinch, I've literally used a piece of cardboard instead of the fancy discs and...it worked out alright.

My boyfriend, who is very much a HVM, has high standards for the men my friends date. Like, he'll encourage them to break up with LVM immediately.

I think that the women who are happiest to be mothers are actually the ones who respect the choice of childfree women not to have children. It's women who feel like they made a mistake who seem to want to convince childfree women of what a "perfect gift" children are. They're not for everyone. I mean, the reason I don't want kids is that...I just don't. I never had that feeling like "Yes, I want kids!" So I figured, you know, I wouldn't have any. I love kids, but I don't want my own.

Damn...isn't this the truth. When I was depressed, I just...put up with it. After I started working on it and getting treatment, I realized how fucked up it was to accept a man's low mood all the time. The guy I'm with now...he laughs and I melt. He laughs easily and he smiles and it's just such a 180 compared to what I was previously used to dealing with. But I needed to level up to make it happen.

This is the thing. This is what it took me too long to realize. "Oh, it's safe for him to be himself around me and let go, that's why this always happens." No, dumbass, he chooses to do this to only you because there are no consequences and he's getting exactly what he wants. Sigh. Oh, young me.

You are awesome. That was great. I like how he wasn't even defensive, just like "Ok, she has self respect, guess this isn't going anywhere."

Solidarity! It's so difficult! My biggest problem was having crushes when I was younger and these girls would flirt and we'd even kiss and cuddle and stuff...but it didn't mean anything to them. It was for attention or whatever. Or it was just like...I don't know, nice for them? I guess? And I get it, in a way. But...poor, young, dumb me. Plus the whole "gold star lesbian" thing...it's just tough.

This is what I don't get. If you, as a man, are childfree, get a vasectomy. The end. ??? Why is it more than that? It's a couple days of "feeling like you got kicked in the balls by a donkey" (according to someone I know who had one), a week of recovery after that, and then a test 6 weeks to 6 months down the road to make sure that there are no sperm left. And how do you get rid of that sperm? With lots of ejaculation! Safe cumming, of course - wear a condom if you're engaging with a partner unt…

Mine would tell me that "not saying anything is worse than saying the wrong thing." And when I pointed out that the last time I "said something wrong" it was actually way worse for me, he said, "Well, maybe, but it wasn't worse for me." Right, because you were the one who got to deal out the abuse... Basically, whatever I did in the moment, I was supposed to have done the opposite. Every time. Somehow. Took me far too long to wise up on that.

Agree with u/rubymood. I met a HVM once I had taken care of myself. I'm also medicated and therapied, and I can tell you that being my best made me realize that I deserve the best. The best way to deal with dating when you're struggling is to step back. Focus on yourself, make sure you're in a good place, and then get back into dating. Spend time with friends and family when you're feeling lonely so that you don't end up just finding a LVM to "tide you over."

And it always comes back down to the fact that it's a choice. Abusive men abuse. They choose to do it. If it weren't a choice, they would do it to every person in their life, and that just doesn't happen. And rather than realizing, "Hey, he doesn't treat anyone else like this, only me, so he's capable of not doing it," somehow the thinking ends up as "Hey, he doesn't treat anyone else like this, only me, so I must be doing something really wrong."

Oh my gosh...this is helping me to understand my ex so much more. Like, why do you care so much about something that happened 25 years ago? Literally, 25 years ago? Oh wait, it's because it bruised his EGO and that must never be forgotten and is allowed to dictate his (shitty) behaviour for eternity...

Mine doesn't like coffee. Doesn't drink it at all, never has, doesn't like the smell of it. He's made coffee for me. I got a new machine, he asked me to show him how much coffee to use when I make it so he knows how to make it for me. Because...he loves me and does things that make me SO HAPPY. Also, he's just a considerate person. His parents drink coffee, so guess what, even though he would never use it, he's always had a coffee maker and coffee on hand so that they can have coffee when they v…

This is so true. We waste so much time being with the wrong people because we've been trained to think we're not allowed to wait for the right ones. We see red flags and think "they'll change." We take abuse and think "we were both in the wrong, really." It's heartbreaking. I think of young, accomplished women who get involved with horrible dudes who don't treat them well and who still think they're lucky to have found someone. Oh, and dating older guys because they're so much more mature? How a…
