Joining the group again! I had to take some time away to focus on myself, but things are going much better. This year, I've been having a hard time getting into the holiday spirit. A while ago, the SO and I were talking and I mentioned how I'm having a hard time and I just wish I could pull myself out of it. So my sweet little Grinch decided that we'd take today to decorate for Christmas - he's never been one for this, so I was super surprised at his enthusiasm. When I brought this up this eveni…

Warning: not a happy field report. Feeling a little discouraged, in all honesty. Last week, I tried to take a page out of Laura Doyle's book and focus on myself a bit more - he felt like I was withdrawing. This week, I've been stepping up my dress and grooming to a disastrous reception - perfume literally made him gag (since when?? He used to love this smell, what the heck!), dressing a little snazzier has been met with "you just look like you're going to work" or my personal favorite (🙄) ".....…

Honestly, it might just be the way she prefers to present herself. Maybe it's a matter of comfort, too. I've struggled with some mental illnesses (all being treated now!) that definitely left me feeling like wearing big, body stuff was safer - partly because I knew it looked so boyish, it made me feel like I could disappear. Who knows. Some people just have strained relationships with the concept of femininity, especially feminine presentation. If she seems comfortable and happy with her appeara…

Well, LGBTQ+ aesthetics have a long history and complex background that I'm not going to break down here, partly because I'm simply not as well educated on it as I could be and don't want to do injustice to the topic. Though if you are interested in learning about that topic, I'd highly suggest reading about it as it's pretty interesting! I think that, regardless of sexuality, sometimes it has to do with internalized sexism. In a society that praises the traits typically associated with masculin…

Today was a super productive day, which is always nice. Got to roam around town in a sundress and run errands with my SO. Our anniversary is coming up and I need to get presents ASAP. I have an idea in mind, I just can't find quite what I'm looking for.....pray for me, lol.

Not to mention that in the same sentence that she's describing how her husband cheats on her, she also mentions how he physically harmed her. I feel pretty strongly that this is not something to stick around, especially if you've got kids. OP, I don't like being like this. But these men sound dangerous to have around your child. As a woman who grew up with a father who sounds a bit like your husband and a mother who tried to use her "softness" to hide that he was ever like that, I can honestly s…

I'm thinking about how to strike the right balance of feminine and comfy for house attire. When I get home from work, the last thing I want to do is keep wearing my work clothes, but I'm also tired of looking frumpy and wary of looking sloppy. Any feminine and cute outfit ideas for bopping around the house are welcome! (Preferably plus size friendly, please. I'm working toward losing weight, but I need to also dress the body I currently have.) Contemplating how badly I need to deep condition my …

For me, I like to describe it as adding a color to the world. I am not a child, and I am a complete person. My life has always had color in it, through family and friends and the things I love to do and experience. Life is full, and I think a healthy love is born of two complete individuals coming together to share a life together. But through the love that I feel for my partner, they have brought a new color to my life, and I begin to see that color everywhere and can't imagine life without thi…

I love decorating for the holidays, baking/cooking, family time, all of it. But I am stressing over gifts this year. My SO's interests are just too expensive for me to funnel money into at the moment. I feel terrible about it. I've found a few things, but I'm not really sure how I'm going to make this work. I might have to make a special trip out without him to go pick up some things, which will be a tough sell lol. Thankfully, my family started doing Secret Santa, so I don't have to get a gift …

Today's thoughts: I'm having the hardest time trying to figure out what to get my SO for Christmas. The list I've created is full of things on backorder, or things that are outright nowhere to be found. I may have to broaden my horizons. I'm trying to express my femininity more lately, as I've been pretty down lately and I'd like to turn that around. Not only working on getting back into physical self care, but back into the mental and emotional aspects.

I realized my SO was the one fairly early on into our relationship because of the way he was there during really difficult times for me. A few months into us dating, my terminally ill parent went into the hospital and we were told that they may not make it past the holidays. Instead of shying away, he was my rock. He gave me rides back and forth to the hospital, visited with my parents in the hospital, met my entire family under these circumstances. And when asked about it, he simply said "I lov…

Thank you so much for responding! I honestly feel like you've given me a lot to think about in your post and replies that I wouldn't have thought of on my own, and I appreciate that. Seems like I have some personal deep diving to do. (Also, yay for someone else who appreciates Dr. Perel's work!)

I mean no offense by this, but is there a possibility your sister is struggling with her mental health? The description of her sleeping all day and struggling to take care of herself set off some alarms for me, as someone who struggles with depression. Gently letting her know that you care about her and that there's no shame in talking to a doctor about it might be a step in the right direction, if that's the case. It's hard to care about being feminine enough in other people's eyes if you just …

I feel like maybe I am misunderstanding your point, so bear with me here as I try to untangle it! I agree with your first statement, that no one can ever completely fulfill all of another person's needs. But I'm not sure about the rest. On one hand, what you're saying reminds me of what Esther Perel discusses in her book Mating in Captivity, where love and desire don't always go hand in hand, and it is often the security of love that puts a damper on desire. On the other, I'm not sure what you m…

I agree! Girly and high maintenance are absolutely not the same thing. I'm just stating how girliness was seen and talked about in the area that I grew up in.

I grew up in a rural area, so I definitely understand what you're saying. I can't speak for everywhere, but in my area, being seen as "girly" translated to high maintenance and "uppity" (for lack of a better term) in most people's minds, which just didn't mix with a very country community full of outdoorsy types. In a community where men want their women to go hunting and fishing with them during the day and go drink at a bonfire at night, it didn't tend to blend well. There was also some weird …

To answer the question in the title, I think it's due to internalized sexism. In a society that praises the traits typically associated with masculinity, it's not a stretch to inadvertently devalue femininity because of it. It's sad to me that in an effort to be valued and fight for gender equality, things viewed as traditionally feminine have been devalued by men and women alike. Edit: I've also noticed that that while we devalue feminine traits, we value feminine appearance to a detrimental ex…

Forever wishing my neighborhood had a recycling program! We've got so much cardboard packaging and whatnot, and I hate having to just toss it in the trash :( I just bought my SO's anniversary presents last night. I got him two hats (he loves hats and collects fun ones, so I got him a hat from his favorite beer and a hat that is themed after his favorite video game series), a book that looks into the science of a franchise he loves, and a funny shirt that I know he'll love. I also plan to paint h…

I’ve made it a big priority to listen and engage Yes! I think people struggle with active listening, as opposed to the passive form. Being active and engaging makes all the difference in a person feeling like they're talking to you, not at you.

I'm so late to the game on this post!! TV: Just finished Sons of Anarchy. Casually doing a Sailor Moon rewatch. And watching a lot of educational videos. Movies: not too many! Books: Mating in Captivity by Esther Perel, and Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall. The first book is great for helping dissect the strange imbalance between love and desire in LTRs, and the second is a critical text that gets into the need for a more diverse and intersectional approach to feminism. Music: lately, I have been …

Your SO sounds pretty similar to mine! I'm not sure if yours goes through phases like this, but my SO definitely has times where he is just in a "I do what I want" mindset. At first, I didn't really know how to handle this, but I started approaching it as an exercise in healthy submission. When he is in that phase, I tell him "whatever you think is best, babe!" and "go for it!" Cheering him on seems to really bolster him, and he appreciates it. However, when it is a big topic that affects us bot…
