It isn't "those with desirable traits survive," it's "those with genes best suited to a particular environment have the highest PROBABILITY of survival and this changes overtime." It isn't the case that all "unfit" individuals die and all"fit" individuals survive, just that on average "fit" individuals tendto reproduce more.
