The nerve of them chanting the English equivalent of ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!, comparing themselves to the Chilean resistance to the Pinochet coup, who were tortured and whose bodies rest in mass graves, is the most sickening part of this circus act.

I don't know about that. Valentine's Day is what you make of it. I'm in a great relationship right now and Valentine's Day has been really nice as a day for us both to reaffirm our love for each other.

Even if you don't like her music, this isn't accurate for this subreddit. Music taste is subjective, whereas unfair treatment is pretty easy to demonstrate. You should air your grievances about pop music somewhere else.

Oh, really? Even when considering that most divorces occur in the first ten years of marriage (specifically, during the first two years and the 5th–8th years of marriage) — and, in most countries, all same-sex marriages are currently in their first ten years?

Right, and I’m saying I wrote several paragraphs of argumentation, and I’m satisfied that the only thing you can raise an objection to is that the Stanford researcher was quoted in Slate rather than the National Review. This is, of course, in place of an objection to any of the actual content of my response. This has been a fun exercise, but we’ve reached the limits of your actual argumentation. You’re not the type to allow your mind to be changed by evidence, so this debate won’t exactly evolve…

“Do you think that might be because opposite-sex marriages weren’t legalized in most countries around six years ago?” is a fairly straightforward yes-or-no question.

No rebuttal, then. I’m satisfied with that.

Yes, and the same is true of genetic infertility disorders, or the mere act of being a bachelor, and yet we don’t discriminate against the unmarried. Not contributing to the production of children is not a value judgment. Chess doesn’t contribute to the production of children. Is chess morally depraved? You also say that “[same-sex couples] push against the norms and demand special treatment and upset the balance of society.” First: “Push against the norms.” Do you have something against Galileo…

Yeah, and do you think that might be because opposite-sex marriages weren’t legalized in most countries around six years ago? You continue stating cherry-picked facts and then trying to convince fools that they support your unfounded conclusions, when multiple much-more-likely conclusions already exist. Like, just because it’s incredibly likely that extra-terrestrial forms of intelligent life exist somewhere in our galaxy doesn’t mean I have to believe you if you tell me you were abducted by a f…

Nobody is disputing that homosexuality and bisexuality are minorities. Furthermore, there seems to be an absence in the scientific literature about whether “the herd of most animals” “support this”: What evidence we do have suggests that no such policing of sexual behavior exists. A male dog mounted by another male dog might reject the coupling, but there’s no sign that it takes any more offense than would a female that’s not in heat. In some primate species, young females will take umbrage at a…

What, exactly, is changing? We know that exhibiting homosexual and bisexual behavior is a trait of most animal species. And we know that conversion therapy has been shown to be ineffective and harmful, and that sexuality seems to be something that exists within people, unaffected by attempts to change it, personally motivated or not. We also know that intercourse, romantic relationships, and marriage do not become immoral or harmful in a same-sex setting. And we know this in spite of our bias to…

“The number of divorces among same-sex couples more than trebled (sic) between 2016 and 2017 – although this is not surprising since marriages of same-sex couples have only been possible in England and Wales since March 2014.” Nicola Haines of the UK Office for National Statistics, as quoted in The Guardian in September 2018.

You’re conflating two phenomena here. Women’s happiness has fallen over the past few decades, but that doesn’t mean you can extrapolate that trend to the scale of centuries or millenia. You’re also inserting your crackpot hypothesis into the premise, with the help of the very vague “roles in life” sentiment. This is a complicated matter, the subject of serious research, which I don’t presume to be an expert on. But here’s part of an explanation: While Wolfers says factors like social isolation c…

Well, many say that Muhammad split the moon in two, or that the earth is a flat disc. Many prosperous societies throughout history performed a ritualistic sacrifice on their firstborn children. The responsibility to critically examine the ethics of our society cannot be shifted onto ancient and Iron Age societies. What we know is the following: Homosexual behavior has been documented in hundreds of non-human animals, in every major geographic region and major animal group — and that conversion t…

To be honest with you, I really don’t think any of the evidence supports that conclusion. We’re continuing to learn more and more about autism and the brain, and more people are being tested for autism because there is more awareness of what autism is, looks like, and feels like. I’d also hesitate to ascribe autistic traits to “how men are”, historically. Difficulty with sensory processing, repetitive behaviors, and social awareness are not exactly typical traits of either sex. Also, it’s worth …

If you don’t want to be a stay-at-home mom, nobody’s forcing you to be. If you want to be a stay-at-home dad, nobody’s stopping you. Both career work and housework are worthy of dignity. I don’t think it’s exactly fair to say that housework is “unpaid labor.” Unlike the labor done at the job, all the value produced by housework is kept, and it’s embodied directly as use-values. There’s no monetary component because, unlike ordering food or a maid, the value produced here was wholly external to t…

I’d consider myself an egalitarian. I advocate for women’s rights, sure, but I advocate much louder for men’s rights, as our perspective is underrepresented and often goes undiscussed. I’m opposed to the underlying tenets of feminism because at its core I view patriarchy theory to be harmful, bioessentialist, and sexist overall.

Policies and laws cannot contain a genuine social movement. Hell, the Communist Control Act still hasn’t been repealed, and that hasn’t stopped us. In the words of Fred Hampton: You can kill the revolutionary, but you can’t kill the revolution.

As a Communist in America, I can often be overcome with the same kind of defeatism. It helps to be able to have some guiding figures to look up to and rally around. As an American communist, for me that's figures like Gus Hall, Will Foster, Eugene Debs, Woody Guthrie, Paul Robeson, Jarvis Tyner, and so on. As an egalitarian/masculist it's people like Earl Silverman and Erin Pizzey. You have to be able to keep your head up, and have some perspective. This recent paradigm, if we track it back to G…

Fetishes are fetishes. They might make you uncomfortable, but they‘re nothing more than private fantasies. Someone having a recurring rape fantasy doesn’t mean they actually want to be jumped.

You’re just as bad as the feminists — choosing to see the whole history of human society through the lens of gender, and cherrypicking until you have a narrative you’re satisfied with. There’s no need to be afraid of the truth.

Did this in high school. Sleepless night, was completely careless and grabbed the wrong end. I‘ve got pretty quick reflexes, so I’m lucky that I was only left with second-degree burns. Nurse gave me a tiny cup of water to keep my fingers in, made me attend the rest of the school day.

The only kind of woman who says, “Not all women are assholes,” is an asshole. If you really were a “nice girl,” you’d be saying, “Wow, lots of women are fucking assholes to men. Let’s do something to change that.”

Not wanting my partner to set up a secret camera before we have sex and upload that to the Internet without my knowledge or consent is a feminist position now, apparently.

This is always brought up as a gotcha, but I’ve never seen feminists actually stick their neck out for it. I’ve also seen feminists completely disagree with it. It’s a little like some religions — there’s what an individual believer will say the religion means, and what the actual observed result is.

Power comes from wealth and from your relation to the process of production, not from gender. A homeless man can’t very well use his “male privilege” to buy himself a warm meal.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is not the same thing as the scientific consensus. Man-made climate change, the efficacy of social distancing and face masks in limiting the spread of COVID-19, the spheroid shape of the earth. These are all, demonstrably and overwhelmingly, the consensus positions of the international scientific community. The scientific community is not in consensus about the efficacy and ethics of circumcision.

“I have never seen anything in medical literature as bad as circumcision literature. A lot of it stands out to me as bullshit,” says Dr. George Denniston, founder of Doctors Opposing Circumcision, based in Seattle, Washington. “Advocates for circumcision use medical literature to promote their cause and don’t give a damn if it’s true or not. I don’t think this is controversial at all. It’s cut and dry. There is just no way it should be done. Circumcision violates the first rule for doctors: to d…

Having a double mastectomy lowers the risk for breast cancer. Also, “less pleasure” is probably less important than the psychological experience of knowing that your body has been violated. Also, the foreskin is meant to protect the glans throughout childhood, so I’d argue it’s less safe having the exposed glans being constantly pressed against a dirty diaper for years.
