Dont lift to failure on big compounds (squat, bench, deadlift). I usually leave 1-2 reps in the tank. When starting a new training cycle specially if you are comming back from a break or injury/sickness is better to start on the lighter side and have room to grow, rather than rush and start heavy. When short on time i prioritize big compounds. Lift in all rep ranges. I spend time in the 8-10, then 4-6, then 2-3. I rarely ever max out, maybe like twice a year.
