He's using drastically worse things, that are nearly universally hated, to show that people will still be adamantly against ideads which have virtually no truth or redeeming qualities. Respectfully, I think there's a bit of a Dunning-Kruger effect displayed in your opinion on studying History (can't speak to French). There is much more to analyzing history in an academic way than one would be able to learn just by reading some books or pursuing it as a hobby.
