I've been out to Calgary a few times, the center of a lot of these operations. And admittedly, there are quite a few women working on the oil rigs -- maybe 20%. Don't want to generalize too much here, but agree that there's a tendency that these jobs are more appealing for men.

I know for police and several emergency services positions, they are actively trying to encourage female participation (to the point where being a female gives you extra points in an application). Agree. Women tend to work less hours per year. Several reasons for this, some of them deal with the tendency of women to be more likely to take a paternity leave, women are statistically less likely to take on long work weeks, and women are less likely to take on extra work. I like keeping the inclusion of both "Men" and "Women" in the title of the Resource Centre -- just so it's explicitly clear that it's meant to be a safe place for both genders.
