Go work out they say…It's definitely different than 15-20 years ago. But I've found it actually kind of interesting and there are quality people out there. But they aren't spending their time with everyone, just the people they choose. The easiest example is with dating apps, where I will get completely different matches if I'm 100 pounds overweight and spouting negativity than if I'm fit, working on myself, and have lots to offer people. And it's not like people are jerks who are seeking out overweight, depressed p… | /r/Divorce_Men | 08/01/24 05:37 PM
Go work out they say…I think this isn't a true generalization, it's just your experience. So it's important for me not to judge everyone based on the sample I've experienced. It's a big world out there, and there are many people. You said that you're struggling and not in good physical shape. So it's quite possible and likely that you may not be encountering some quality people because they are avoiding you. It takes effort (and is really fun) to meet and learn about people. You can't judge people based on superfici… | /r/Divorce_Men | 08/01/24 04:49 PM
Go work out they say…But you don't have to be or stay that way. One thing you'll find is that you aren't fixed. And you have more control over yourself than you think or fear. So don't dwell on being a loser. Most people are losers. Just do positive things to help you realize what you can modify. | /r/Divorce_Men | 08/01/24 04:45 PM
The Gym is NOT the Answer for Everyone…and Could Even be Dangerous…It’s not a cure all. It’s just good advice. Everyone should keep giving it. Your points are kind of valid but don’t matter. It’s one of many positive things that really apply to anyone going through life changes where self esteem and physical health are good ideas. The gym is for everyone. At least to try. | /r/Divorce_Men | 31/12/23 07:12 PM
Legal questions about debt and getting a divorce. If your wife if rational, and well advised by an attorney, she won’t accept having her name on the car’s title and your name on the note. This is too much risk that you’ll default and she’ll lose the car. Also, your bank probably holds the title until the loan is paid, and you won’t be able to sign it over to her. And you said you’ve been irresponsible with debt, along with her, in the past so having a 3-6 year loan ahead after divorce is asking for unnecessary headaches. Since debts and assets … | /r/Divorce_Men | 28/12/23 02:57 PM
Divorced and clueless about dressing well/fashion. Advice?Get an unlined wool so it doesn’t have too much shape. Pay about $300-800 or get one from goodwill. It will go with everything and last for 40 years. | /r/Divorce_Men | 19/11/23 06:17 PM
Divorce costsI suspect it’s a percentage of divisible assets. There’s so many factors where I’ve read about bitterly contested divorces that cost $10k and ones that cost $100k. I don’t know if it’s ever knowable but I suspect that it’s always about 10-20% of assets (eg, if there’s $500k available to pay lawyers it will cost $50-100k total from both sides; but if there’s only $25k then it only costs $2-5k total both sides). | /r/Divorce_Men | 11/10/23 01:36 AM
Division of Assets Related QuestionsDo you have any student loans? I would bet that your STBX is asking for recoupment and will negotiate it away for her not having half of her student loans. I don't know about your state, but in mine, my attorney said that pensions and home value and all other valuations depend on the final date of judgement, not separation. It seems like there are lots of weird requests, my attorney said that at trial everything is basically split 50/50. So you can agree to pay expenses or whatever you like, but… | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/09/23 09:26 PM
Pretty sure my ex ruined herself financiallyIt will cost you out of pocket. Judge will probably just say "don't do that again" and is unlikely to award you attorney fees over such a small amount. If your divorce is final, then this will cost you just to get before the judge. If your divorce is pending, then just save this for the end as one more thing. But ask your attorney and see what they say. And know that you're paying your attorney to as them questions like this. | /r/Divorce_Men | 18/09/23 01:07 AM

I should have listenedI’d keep some of my stuff and my retirement It seems unlikely that any judge would let you keep your retirement. It's a community asset and will be split 50/50. Even if you are the only one who paid into it. Even if you funded other stuff that she keeps instead of retirement. One thing that helped me is to create a "marital balance sheet" that lists all assets and debts. Unless there's some special circumstance (it's a pre marital asset, it's inheritance and your state breaks that out), it's get… | /r/Divorce_Men | 09/09/23 05:42 PM
Top 10 mistakes men make in divorceI'm not sure about that. My ex hid every asset they had and it was like pulling teeth to go through discovery to find them. Do you know what the judge did about those false statements and lies and extra costs to discover? Absolutely nothing, the judge just added them to the pile and split them 50/50. It was infuriating. | /r/Divorce_Men | 08/09/23 09:19 PM
Financially fucked.Financial aspects of divorce are really hard. One thing that helped me is to focus on what matters and carve away all the “bs thoughts” about what should be or what was planned. You were never going to inherit anything. She was going to inherit. Even in community property states, typically inheritance is not divided. You may have been paying father in law’s mortgage through your rent, but all renters pay someone’s mortgage. | 4 | If you need to get your ex name off the mortgage but refi is unaffordable, look into an assumption.I got quotes a really high closing but most of it was prepaids for insurance and taxes that I already had since I own the home. Initial estimate was $14k, actual was $3k. It seems like they treat it like a new mortgage that requires all these costs. Ask them for a breakdown of closing costs. | /r/Divorce_Men | 31/08/23 08:55 PM
Woman I met said we have to be exclusive to have sexShe didn't ask to marry, right? You don't have to be exclusive forever, just while you are dating them. If you don't like someone enough to be exclusive, then don't be, and move on. I think many people will want to take exclusively, if only for a few weeks or whatever. If you limit yourself to only people who tolerate casual sex, that's your prerogative but you will only be able to date a others who feel similarly. | /r/Divorce_Men | 25/08/23 08:31 PM
How to pay for the divorce lawyer consult when wife handles the money.Fortunately for you there are many attorneys who do not charge for the initial consultation. So you may want to adjust your preference if you want to avoid your wife seeing the charge for “Divorceo Family Law.” As you know, this is a great question to ask your divorce attorney. I don’t think it’s good karma to make others suffer for your mistake. Again, you made a life altering decision for you and another human without doing proper analysis. There’s no new information now. Don't put the blame on her. Don't make a sacrifice for her. That's great that she loves you, but work on whether you love her and if you want to be married to her. This seems like something you should have known and figured out before committing to marriage and definitely something you should communicate about and there was a misunderstanding before marriage. | 7 | Wife wants a divorce but 4 months later and we're still married. A bit of a rambling story, sorry in advanced.I’ve been there. And I suspect many others here as well. 100% certain it isn’t an affair. It’s some other not understood weird shift of someone we’ve known for years. Spoiler, it’s an affair. Maybe your situation is truly unique. But most likely it’s the same as everyone else. It’s natural to think to it ex isn’t a horrible person who would betray everything you’ve built together. But, yeah, she’s definitely banging someone and you’re still in the delusional phase. | /r/Divorce_Men | 20/08/23 01:58 PM
Wife had a 3 year affair with my brother! You can always consult with the two in town lawyers and then hire the big city guy. | 2 | I'm being forced out of house and she doesn't workBecause the mortgage is in his name. He has to pay it whether he lives there or not. Spousal support is money that goes directly from one spouse to another. Paying things that benefit the other spouse (eg, mortgage, power, water, insurance, etc) is not spousal support. It's also not child support. Now talking to her friends she wants me to leave the house and thinks the court will make her the primary care? I’m the bread winner she is a teacher (college degree and multiple banking certs)Don’t leave. Get a lawyer. Do you want to divorce? If so, file. It doesn’t matter much who files and if you file you can get it started. Aim for 50/50 custody. | 4 | Fucked up countryNot knowing your specifics, how would you think courts would decide how to split up assets? Half of college tuition seems pretty reasonable, right? Would you expect to pay less? And for child support, it's just a formula. Do you think you shouldn't pay child support if she has full custody? In my state it's just a function of percent custody and income, so if you made 170 and she made 200 and you had 50/50, she would pay you. I would kill for only half the assets and childcare expenses. | /r/Divorce_Men | 24/07/23 05:48 PM
Ex-Wife stole $3K…what recourse do I have? All banks allow deposit by mail. Fill out a deposit slip, sign it for both parties and mail it in. You don’t need to ask anyone. Then once the check clears mail her half. Sadly, I don’t think you have a case because the check was made to both of you. So she didn’t steal anything. It was hard for me to learn that the standard for neglect is what the family or criminal courts consider neglect, not what I consider neglect as a parent. So if she's leaving your 2 year old alone for 24 hours, that's neglect. Call the cops. But a court won’t care. It’s very frustrating because my paramount goal was to minimize harm to my kids but they are definitely worse off because of ex’s behavior. However, you can’t control her actions. You can’t control what she reads and leaves around the house. She’s going to bring men over to meet the kids, you can’t do anything. You're going to encounter a million things like this and it's a good idea to work on some way that it doesn't affect you. You can't control her behavior. | 1 | Does anyone else think alimony is BS?I think alimony was set up because many spouses give up their work for family and alimony helps distribute income over the life of the individuals. That being said, the lesson here is to never have one spouse working and the other not. If both partners make similar income then alimony won’t exist. | 1 | My ex-wife told me she got "raped" by multiple men, multiple times. At first I felt all sympathetic for her, until she told me by who, when and where.I disagree. I think there are lots of types of breakups. But I wouldn’t want to be romantically involved with someone who is loaning money to exes, especially so they can buy crack. People borrow money from friends because all banks and loan sharks have turned them down. There’s no reason to still be friends with a toxic ex after 13 years. It’s not a sign of maturity. | 1 | Should I sign Quit Claim? If there are multiple owners, then how can the bank repossess due to non-payment if only one owner takes out a mortgage? Is there some release that the other owner signs to allow it? Otherwise, that seems like an opportunity for abuse if there are multiple owners then one could takeout mortgage for full amount and just not pay and then have the home repossessed. | /r/Divorce_Men | 05/04/23 04:55 PM
Should I sign Quit Claim?I've wondered this too. I'm not sure how someone refinances unless they are the only person on the deed, thus needing a quitclaim before refi. Narcissism doesn't ruin marriages as like 75% of the planet is "narcissist." If someone is married to a narcissist for 10 years, they can be for 20 or 50. Things to consider: is the sale above board (ie, not to a special party, for a fair value, not in exchange for some future career consideration, etc); taxes (ie if you sell stock for $50k and pay off debt for $50k, what about the taxes due on that $50k of earnings); would your spouse prefer the stock ove… | /r/Divorce_Men | 26/01/23 10:40 AM

It was weird how the judge doesn’t really care what the attorneys say, but they would repeat the same lie or mean phrase 20 times. In just random interactions. One thing I found that helps is not to talk on the phone. There’s nothing short of an emergency that requires a phone call. Put everything in writing and wait a week before responding. | /r/Divorce_Men | 18/11/22 12:50 PM |
Parenting PlanMediation is not cheap, but it’s cheaper than getting lawyers and going in front of the judge. If you have a better idea for resolving conflict in the parenting plan, please share. I think it’s better to be super explicit in the parenting plan to set up rules that make it unnecessary for mediation or court. | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/10/22 04:13 PM
Parenting PlanYep, it doesn’t stop the arguments it just pushes everything downstream. Being able to agree to a mediator / arbiter (prolly not ex’s mother) ahead of time will save money 5 years from now when there’s a disagreement like who pays for the fancy braces or horse camp in Switzerland, etc etc | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/10/22 01:11 PM
Parenting PlanNot all divorce decrees include a parenting plan, but I think it’s a good idea. The parenting plan doesn’t have to be a set of inflexible rules and could be as simple as “custody should be split 50/50 per parents judgement and all disagreements are mediated by X.” Perhaps you have some zen relationship with your ex but without a parenting plan you have to go back to court and that’s expensive. | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/10/22 01:04 PM
MacKenzie Scott (Jeff Bezos exwife) fill divorce from second husband.Comically money market accounts have been 0.01% for the past few years. Still $100k per billion but not as much as usual. | /r/Divorce_Men | 29/09/22 10:10 PM
Why ?Sadly you will never have this answer or have closure. The closest I’ve found is “because this is why we are getting divorced.” It’s a tough realization when I accepted that the universe doesn’t answer “why?” and I just don’t know. If you’re religious, God might tell you when you’re dead. If you’re not religious, you’ll never know. Even if she told you why, you wouldn’t be able to believe it. Don’t focus on trying to answer, just work on what you will do. | /r/Divorce_Men | 28/09/22 11:36 AM
What do you wish was in your custody agreement?I don’t think there are high conflict exes but there are high conflict couples. We have a lot of ability to reduce and avoid conflict. If my ex is able to constantly cause conflict, then there’s probably something I can do to not have conflict. Or perhaps I also create conflict. | /r/Divorce_Men | 21/09/22 12:00 PM
Anyone else in the early stages of divorce/separation and telling friends and family? This was surprising to me too. I had been working with counselors and trying to “figure out” how to improve my marriage. I was surprised how many couple friends told me how my wife had been saying how much our marriage sucked and had been planning to leave for years. The part that surprised me was that she didn’t say anything to me and instead of talking about ideas to improve marriage was talking about how to set up financially for a divorce. | /r/Divorce_Men | 22/05/22 04:31 PM
Anyone else in the early stages of divorce/separation and telling friends and family? The hardest part is just struggling with how it’s so much context that is really impossible to communicate. Second hardest is people who say “we love you both and don’t want to take sides.” Third is it’s surprising how many people don’t think cheating is very bad or hearing their justification. | /r/Divorce_Men | 22/05/22 04:26 PM
Where do women even get the money to fund divorce shenanigans?Married people have joint finances, so either party can use funds to pay for lawyers and attorneys. It burns up savings but I think that may be part of the point. Funds are spent up so neither party has them. I don’t think it’s an ethical thing to do, but I think many people end up burning through all savings. | /r/Divorce_Men | 16/05/22 04:34 PM
Start a Diary!Note that your diary is discoverable if you go to trial. Everything written down anywhere will get read by opposing. | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/05/22 05:41 PM
Start a Diary! You posted to this forum, that's asking for advice. I think GP was just trying to help, so being polite is the right move here. If you don't want any advice and don't want comments, then state that in your post and let the world know that you're just venting and don't want anything back. Or better yet, just don't post at all. | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/05/22 05:40 PM
Should I tip?Yes, of course. Get a crisp $1 bill and make a big show of hanging it over. That way opposing counsel gets jealous that their non-insane client didn’t tip them. | /r/Divorce_Men | 20/04/22 04:39 PM
Forensic PsychologistIf you’re paying the psychologist and there’s no measure but your validation, then, following the rules of consultants, they will validate your feelings. | /r/Divorce_Men | 17/04/22 05:52 PM
*RANT* Over $15k in, still no signed agreement despite multiple handshake dealsI suppose it helps that there are others worse off. It's good to put things in perspective. If I had to guess, I think it's probably closely correlated to a percentage of assets and it's just a coincidence that attorneys bill lots for people who have money and not as much for people who don't. | /r/Divorce_Men | 15/03/22 03:50 PM
*RANT* Over $15k in, still no signed agreement despite multiple handshake dealsSorry, it’s a nightmare and I don’t know when it ends. I’ve spent, directly about $20k and my spouse has spent more and we have no end in sight. It’s surreal how stupid this all is and that it costs so much. I’m not rich either, just lawyers have been having us max out all our credit cards and liquidate all assets to put them. | /r/Divorce_Men | 15/03/22 03:14 PM
Birthday parties. i just want to rant. One thing that's helped me, and I learned in the state mandated parenting seminar, is no passing messages. If my kids friends parents want to invite them to something on my weekend, they should message me. If they ask me and it's my spouses's weekend, I ask them to message my spouse. If my spouse makes plans on my week-end, I ask them not to, and then don't follow them as I didn't make the plans. My kids have been very helpful and when they ask me, I just ask their parents to contact me. It take… | /r/Divorce_Men | 12/03/22 11:58 PM
My wife told me on New Year's Eve she wanted a divorce. Today she confirmed it.If you give her time, you’ll lose your house, end up with 50/50 custody paying about40-60% of your income in alimony and child support. Get a lawyer now and get started while she says she just wants to split. | /r/Divorce_Men | 26/02/22 12:05 AM
Should I divorce before or after vowel renewal?Sorry to break it to you, but you’re going to have no money whenever you divorce. Your finances will be fuxored for a few years so don’t spend time worrying about that. Imaging eye divorce shitshow you’re going to have in court if you file after spending thousands of dollars renewing vows. It’s likely that if your wife knows (since you’re posting stuff on the internet), you’ll be forced to pay for all bow expenses yourself. | /r/Divorce_Men | 15/01/22 07:14 PM
