Kalat (2013) discusses this phenomenon: "How can we explain why men and women are equal in intellect, but men have larger brains? One pontentially relevant factor pertains to relative amounts of gray matter (cell bodies) and white matter (axons). Women average more and deeper sulci on the surface of the cortex, especially in the frontal and parietal areas. Consequently, the surface area of the cortex is almost equal for men and women. Because the surface is lined with neurons, the sexes have abo…

Probably true, unless you have an incredibly strenuous workout routine.

Anorexia is medical term which refers to body weight, not caloric intake.

I suppose rudeness and name calling serve their own purposes. They demonstrate anger, passion, and assertiveness and show that the person using them wants to be heard. They're also useful for venting negative feelings. I can appreciate that, especially when I'm sure plenty of people on here, and plenty of people who talk like that, have had terrible experiences which justify anger. I'm just saying that perhaps, for their own benefit, some people may want to be more mindful regarding who is the t…

Ick. I don't know why people think that's okay.

Yeah, 'cause of the grammatical error.

Nope. I'm actually from Massachusetts. It's starting to occur to me that my perception of feminism might be starkly different from a lot of people on here because of where I'm from. The culture here is certainly much different than a lot of the rest of the country (or world, even.) I can appreciate how people's experiences in other places are likely a lot different from mine.

I'm not trying to imply that MRAs exist to make me feel comfortable. Rather, I thought I'd point out how that post sounded. It's difficult to get people to appreciate and respect what you're saying when you're angry, name-calling, and blatantly unwelcoming. From what I've seen, this subreddit is full of people with different types of thoughts and opinions. You can't tell everyone who doesn't think like you to "GET THE FUCK OUT". What you can do, though, is to have a respectful and meaningful dis…

The intention of my post was to recognize and appreciate his anger. My hope in doing so would be that perhaps, he could recognize that he was mad at particular people or sets of circumstances and not at ME. I was hoping that perhaps, he would be open to discussing his viewpoints with me in a way that wasn't so hateful. That's how we make progress, isn't it? Movements are going to find it very difficult to gain supporters when people looking to support and understand them are insulted and told to…

1) As I've tried to articulate to other people, I don't think you can say that "feminism" follows any particular theory. I think you need to ask individual feminists what their thoughts are about patriarchy. As for me, specifically, I recognize that there are far more men in political and high-up corporate positions than women. I think this is probably a mix between the fact that it's harder for women to attain these positions and that (at least I'd be willing to believe) less women seek out suc…

I actually like the idea that the moderation rules aren't particularly stringent. I don't think people should be banned for unpopular opinions, either. What I do think, though, is that if someone says something particularly hateful or that misrepresents me or someone else, it can be useful to try to have a conversation with that person. That's what I'm trying to do here. Maybe I'll find that some people saying those things have had terrible experiences that lead to a bias, or maybe some people a…

It occurs to me that I've only been subscribed to "feminisms" and 2x. I haven't even been on Feminism. I've just subscribed to it, though, realizing that I may be missing a significant amount of viewpoints. I wonder why they don't have downvoting. I've noticed that on a couple of other subreddits, too.

Thank you for posting this. I had no idea that this was a thing. It says: "The Feminist Majority PAC was founded in 2002 to support Congressional candidates who will carry the banner of women’s rights. We continue to help feminist candidates across the country with donations, contacts and campaign advice. With the wide range of feminist issues that we support, our overarching focus is to elect feminist women who will champion our causes in the halls of Congress." I wonder how they're actually de…

Really? Thank you for interjecting. That's so interesting to me. If you don't mind and can remember, what was it about?
/r/MensRights31/12/12 06:39 PM

I'm sorry to hear that you feel that way. It seems, though, that several other people on this subreddit are open to discussing their viewpoints with me, even if they think we disagree. I've been respectful to everyone and am an adamant advocate for men's rights. If you're still bothered by my presence/posts, you certainly don't have to read them. If I've offended you in any way, I would absolutely be open to talking about that. I think it's important to be open-minded, especially with your allie…

It's so interesting to me to be repeatedly hearing that people disagree with feminism or even find it "repugnant". I can understand how you would disagree with the view of extremists, but aside from them, I've always perceived feminism to be about equality for the sexes. I'm curious; what about feminist ideology do you find repugnant?
/r/MensRights31/12/12 06:33 PM

I think you make a good point. It wasn't until this conversation, though, that I felt I ever had to label myself the "equality brand" of feminism. My experience has mostly been that I express it, meaning so, and have assumed that people understood this. It bothers me that such a distinction must be made, since I believe it to be the very point of the ideal for myself. You made sense. I'm sorry you feel unwell. It's 2:35 AM here. Is it very late for you, as well? Perhaps getting some sleep would …

Hey. I just want to let you know how you're coming across to me. When I started reading your comment, I was immediately put on the defensive stance. It was hard for me to read through this and remain open-minded about what you had to say, but I tried. You seem very angry about this issue. You started out by making it clear that you "have ZERO interest in being friendly" toward me, followed that up with some name-calling, and ended with "Fuck you" and "GET THE FUCK OUT". Your assertions that I'm …

I'm not saying that such posts don't exist. I would be surprised if they didn't, actually. What I am saying, though, is that I've noticed several such posts on this subreddit, but not those. This would suggest to me that they are more common here. This doesn't particularly matter, though. I think what's most important to recognize is that they exist on both sides and that this is a problem. It's true that not all women would consider themselves feminist or believe in the same things. I think thi…
/r/MensRights31/12/12 07:14 AM

To me, being a feminist has always meant a belief in equality. To that end, feminist can be a predicate in that it denotes one's egalitarian values. ("I am a feminist." "I am a person who believes in equality.) I didn't expect our discussion to get down to this kind of semantics, but I'm actually really glad it did. I think discussions such as these are great in that they promote the open-minded, direct, and respectful exchange of thoughtful ideas. Just when I was starting to become pessimistic …

I'm not familiar with MGTOW. From what I understand, they're a group on the internet with a somewhat similar purpose to this subreddit? I'll admit, there have been times when a person says something so hateful that I question where it came from. Occasionally, I'd read more of that person's comments to other people to try to understand them better. I've noticed that a lot of people who say something particularly hateful tend to do so on a fairly regular basis and have some kind of negative experi…

I, too, am bordered by female-prioritized custody and making false and hyperbolic claims. I'm glad that you recognize that individual feminists do not necessarily subscribe to an over-arching ideology. You used the term "feminist movement as a whole". I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean. I think it's significant to note that laws and social movements have been enacted by individuals. Different types of political and social movements have been based in feminism. Advocating for a woman's ri…
/r/MensRights31/12/12 06:44 AM

I think that feminists are too diverse in their individual interpretations of what it means to be a feminist to be labeled as all being including within a distinct movement. As a person who has used the word feminist to describe myself and truly believes in equality, I would find more resonance within the dictionary definition than identifying with any individual or group of individuals and their interpretation of such a definition. I think it's important to recognize that whatever is represente…
/r/MensRights31/12/12 06:30 AM

I'm not really sure that feminism exists on the sort of spectrum you suggest. What constitutes a "moderate" feminist? The dictionary defines feminism as "the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men." I think it's important to recognize that feminism doesn't necessarily subscribe to any one ideology. Rather, like any social institution, it is as flawed and diverse as human beings. This means that, while based on one abstract concept, "feminists…
/r/MensRights31/12/12 06:24 AM

I think it's a fair point that it's important to be able to criticize what's being said if it's problematic. (Like with this post!) I'm glad to see that in this case, people seem to be fairly receptive to the idea openly discussing what is and is not okay. Thank you for that. I wonder, have you ever tried to bring up your concerns by posting to /r/Feminism about it? If so, what has the response been like? I'm not sure how many people on here would say they were in favor of egalitarianism. I bet …

It sounds like you've had some pretty bad impressions of/encounters with people claiming to be feminists in your lifetime. You used the word "they" a lot. I think it's important to recognize that there are definitely radical feminists out there who perpetuate a 'man-hating' mindset. What I also think is important to point out, though, is that there are a lot of people who used the word "feminist" to describe themselves who truly value equality. It's unfair to condemn everyone under a blanket lab…
/r/MensRights31/12/12 05:59 AM

I think you bring up some really good points. I've considered myself a feminist in the respect that I recognize the term as I learned it: the philosophy that all people deserve equal rights, regardless of sex/gender. I can appreciate, though, your use of the word "equalist" (egalitarian...ist? Is there not a word?) would be more appropriate to describe this approach. I think you're right about the implications in naming movements. How do other people feel about having a separate subreddit for jo…
/r/MensRights31/12/12 05:53 AM

I think you're right to make a distinction between the two. There are definitely people on this subreddit who rightly recognize that "Feminaszism"-like attitudes are detrimental. I would also contend that in addition to these people, there are a significant amount of others who move beyond this fair criticism to generalize problematic behavior to women as a whole.
/r/MensRights31/12/12 05:46 AM

I agree. When I first joined Reddit, my boyfriend told me not to join this subreddit, warning me that it was mostly feminist-bashing. I joined it anyway, thinking that I couldn't be an authentic feminist without being a men's rights advocate, as well. To tell the truth, though, I've definitely noticed a significantly prevalent antagonist attitude toward women on this subreddit. It's definitely not everyone, but it's noticeable. And it occurs more here than it does within the rest of the internet…

Yeah, sexism is terrible...just like women!
/r/MensRights31/12/12 04:41 AM

When I first looked at this, I thought it was a clever way to address this issue. Upon further consideration, I thought, why are people of the gender a problem affects "more qualified" to address the problem? Maybe they're better at recognizing and identifying the problems, but shouldn't an issue of inequality be one which everyone is qualified and even obligated to address? I think that's where the issue for rights on both sides goes wrong. People assume that it's their issue for them to addres…

That sounds like a pretty bad way to handle the situation. As a preschool teacher, however, I'm frequently showing up in the middle of conflicts where someone got hurt. Most of the time, the kids can't really articulate what happened and if they can, they have different stories. I'm sure there have been times when I've attempted to settle playground disputes in a fair way, but really sucked at it. It doesn't mean I have anything against a certain kid or group of people. It's just hard to show up…
