I consider this a man's rite of passage. Don't overthink it. Just do it.

I am in my 40s, and I'm a bookish sort. Aside from brisk walks, I have never liked to exercise. Running makes me feel like I'm hungover, and if I'm going to feel hungover, I'd rather it be from a night of fun. I decided to just do what everyone here says and lift, even though I associate lifting with high school meatheads, and never in a million years thought it's something I would do. Result: it's fucking great. I bought a bench and free weights on CL, and I have it in my garage. I go every oth…

I wonder about telling all of it to your wife. It could be argued that it was employing dread...but it could also be argued that your need to tell her every last thing that happened is not dread at all, but just a manifestation of you being wrapped around her finger. Has her dread that you'll leave really been increased by all this? Wouldn't it be a better play to tell her only SOME of what went down, and let her imagination fill in the rest? I honestly don't know the answer, and I think it depe…

Lester Burnham is for sure an example. He's lifting weights in his garage, doing manly shit around the house, getting all alpha with his boss and getting that sexual harassment money, and getting the cheerleader to dig him by upping his SMV. When I bought and set up my weights in the garage two weeks ago, my wife even said, "What, are you Kevin Spacey in American Beauty?"

Well put. Ha!

Time was, wives came with a dowry, which they brought into the marriage. If there were still dowries, the ring bullshit would be more tenable. (Marcus Aurelius's dowry, by the way, was the throne...he married the daughter of the sitting emperor. When it was brought to his attention that his wife was cheating on him all over the place, he refused to divorce her because, "I would have to return my dowry -- The Empire!") In other news, my wife fucking lost the diamond ring I gave her. Sigh.

I have a ways to go before I get to that level...

I now imagine my wife's hamster as an actual hamster. It is the size of a gorilla and could climb the Empire State Building. Wow is her hamster big and strong.

I've been able to defuse some stuff the last few weeks that beforehand would have escalated. I have a lot of work to do. But I'm getting there.

That thought had occurred to me, but I decided to post anyone and chance the consequences. Decreeing that all validation comes from within, and knowing it intellectually to be so, does not make us stop seeking it. But it's important to be aware of the behavior, I think. That's the first step is putting a stop to it.

I sympathize with your plight. I have been at this for much less time than you have, but at this stage of the game -- or Game, as it were -- I think there are two important questions to determine: How much of this do I reveal to my wife? Because once the cat's out of the bag, it's out of the bag. And, Do I want to remain faithful? Because what's the point of increasing SMV if it's not being utilized? For now, the answer to #1 is, as little as possible but as much as absolutely necessary, and #2 …

I'll tell you who doesn't is that pussy Ed Sheeran. He's the poster boy for beta bucks. The one song where he doesn't overtly sound like a wuss, "Don't," is about how he's all heartbroken that his fuckbuddy fucked another dude. He also said he wouldn't bang Taylor Swift because she's too tall.

That is EXACTLY what my wife said. And I think she's right.

Thanks. I have found wisdom even in the harsh posts...and really the only harsh post was that I should have posted this in the AskMRP sub. I can't remember what our vows actually were, but her obeying me certainly was not mentioned. Re: the friend, I reached out to her just to smooth things over, and that was a big mistake. Afterward, I realized i was trying to be a Nice Guy. But I learned from it, because at first I was upset, and then I realized that I didn't have to be, that it was just shit,…

Thanks. I think that is a good rule of thumb. Also, I fucking hate texting. I am a writer, and my successes in that career, while not lucrative, are still impressive to a lot of people. This woman in particular is impressed by it. So in my particular case, I think that some keyboard does enhance my attractiveness. But I see your point about acta non verba, which really is the crux of the problem for me. I have to get off my ass and do more stuff.

What I have observed is that IDGAF is liberating, fi it can be achieved. Working on it. Thanks.

I just got to that part in the book, the covert contract, and my eyes almost popped out of my head. I do that ALL THE TIME. Thanks.

The problem isn't with my wife; it's with me. I see that now. A lot of work to do.

Thanks...this is very helpful. I'm very new to this, but it's hit me like a ton of bricks, and I'm on board. Started reading NMMNG today...good lord do I have a lot of work to do.

Boinko03, your subjective opinion is valuable, and I appreciate it. Just reading this little mini-exchange with you and Whinemoreplease is enlightening. Thank you both.

Thanks for not killing it. I'm trying to understand -- and if I understand this, I WILL have a clearer vision for my life; this situation is a microcosm of everything -- and these comments have been very helpful. My Rippertoe book came in the mail today, and tomorrow I'm picking up the weights.

Yes, on two fronts: First, my wife is excellent at taking one of her own weaknesses and using it against me. For example, I ALWAYS clean the kitchen, but she might pick a sugar packet off the floor and give me shit about how I didn't pick it up myself. Even though, again, I ALWAYS clean the kitchen. I call this "Swift-boating." Second, yes about the sexual turn-off. I'm new to MRP, and this very problem is one of the reasons I'm here. Curious: how is she when you are sick? My wife is always awfu…
