Suppose this is true (and, of course, it is). What is the solution?

Building on your first paragraph, one could argue that the primary focus of STEM is to create tangible value by developing a product or process by which a need is met or a problem solved, whereas the goal of the sales industry is to create the appearance of value for the purpose of closing a deal.

A few years back, at a hospital I used to work at, we had a medical sales rep come into the OR and ask to use our copier. We showed him where it was and he pulled out a stack of papers to scan. It was clear after about 90 seconds of him standing there pushing random buttons that he had no idea what he was doing. I asked him if he needed any help, to which he replied that he used to sell that very same type of copier in a previous job and that you’d think he’d know how to use it.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
