Unfortunately, I don't think there is any possibility of that. Seems to me people forget when they are talking about the accused that there are still people who will be hurt by these actions for a long time. I really don;t think there is any possible punishment that could really feel like justice for this family. I hope that she gets the maximum allowed under the law, but I fear even that wouldn't be enough. And there is a good likelihood she will get even less.

It's all unfortunately true. From my time recently in college, all the programs, the signs, the rhetoric is all focused on men are bad and women are good. I know that I want to teach, but am terrified of entering a profession where I will be villainized because of my gender.

What really got to me was the programs - rehabilitation, job training, education, support - of course these things should be done for the poor women drug addicts and criminals, because bad things are so much worse for women. And I know I should think of it as a bias. I've seen the bias. I had a therapist tell me how much easier it would be to get help if I was a woman. That any so-called feminist would jump at the opportunity to call a lack of services some sort of direct attack on them. And it's awfully hard to have a partner advocate when you're gay. And no, doesn't really help, cause people see white and male, not 'I like men'.

I know for me, in trying to deal with suicidal feelings, there is a distinct lack of resources. I've had to fight for every bit of help, and as the issues get worse, the fight gets harder and harder. Kind of a general spiral downward, where trying to find what little help there is only pushes you down further

Except that it isn't. Most anti-discrimination laws apply to all businesses, public and private. Now I'm assuming Kansas has a state-wide, gender-based, anti-discrimination law, which would preclude a business from providing services to one gender and denying another. If that's the case, and this stays in effect, then local men would have the right to sue on the basis of gender discrimination.

I don't know what to say. I've been lucky. I've fought with mental health issues since I was a teenager, and every time I've gotten to a really bad place I've been able to get the help I needed. But to have the VA screw up that badly, to have them piss all over someone who gave of themselves to serve, is an inexcusable crime. Dammit, something needs to be done about the way this country treats its vets.

It's a supposed institution of higher learning. You know, it was a lot the same for me and my dad. I don't work with him, but as I've gotten older I realize how similar we really are. What's even worse is how my two siblings treat him. Yeah, he's quiet, reserved, doesn't really show emotions, but it's like they don't even acknowledge him. I mean, they didn't even call him on his birthday or father's day - like he wouldn't care at all. Funny how things change. I was always closer to my mom growing up, and now I'm so much like my dad.

I can't manage to agree more. It's this kind of attitude, this need to be the "bigger man", the refusal of help, the keeping it in and hiding the pain, that is the biggest killer and worst for of oppression.
