Some divorces can be nasty and one should indeed take steps to protect oneself.

Not to be that guy but subreddits are rather self-serving. I believe some women might have the same opinion about this subreddit. And also not to be that guy, but sometimes people do grow apart. Divorce is hard on most people that go through it.

I think what has helped is the realization that it was just not meant to be. Things happen for a reason. I have a lot of regrets, a lot of what ifs. But at the end of the day, it’s about no finding a new happy life for oneself. Life didn’t turn out the way I thought it would. At this point, I have. No choice but to move forward and hope for the best.

Yeah to me is interesting that everyone else has moved on, and I still think I can go “home” and resume where we left off. I know we’re all different. Now I am honestly healing and doing my best to move on too. The brain is super interesting and I think it compartmentalizes to protect us.

I honestly still thought it was “temporary”. It took me a couple of years to realize it was all very much not temporary lol. I’m a slow learner. So I ended up postponing the grief a couple of years into it all hit at once.

You’re lucky you have good friends. That’s really helpful to reconnect with them. And your second to last paragraph is something I could have written (except for the 23 years and the kids part). I think it’s very common and natural. Sometimes I wake up and I think I’m still loving my old life lol. I wish you the best in your healing :)

This resonates with me so much. I would honestly suggest trying to reconnect with old friends and finding hobbies. Essentially your life as you knew it ended. You now have to find a new one for yourself. What I lacked more than anything is meaningful connections like people to hang out with and such. Hang in there!

I’ve done it. It’s fun. I’m like the only guy sometimes.

I used to do this a lot. With time I convinced myself that being alive is better than not being alive (even if marginally better). I did have therapy and I got a cat. Something that helped, strangely enough, was socializing more at work with the right people.

I feel like this. Maybe not as much as loser. More like a lot of guilt and thinking what I could have done to stay married. I did so many bad things at the time. It’s been five years already and the fact that it’s taking me this long does make me feel like a loser. Like my life is a movie in pause.

Dang I remember this. Sometimes I would still wear mine even after the divorce because I thought it was “temporary”. Now that I know it’s not, I stopped a while back. I think the proper time is when you realize it’s over…

For their protection. Assuming everyone is a decent parent, the children have the right to have both of them in their lives. They’re not pawns in a domestic dispute.

Yeah but they were not my friends to begin with. I knew them through the marriage and when it ended, so did their friendships. I lost one of my friends in the process but everyone else that was my friend remained so.

Document as much as you want. If divorce is in the cards and this won’t be amigable, yes I’d contact a lawyer asap. It’s better to be proactive and make sure you cover your ass. Be strong, brother.

Regardless of whether or not it’s true, I do agree I need to get to a healthier place. There’s nothing I can do about the past but to learn from it and move on. Now that the door is closed for good, I have to. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking recently and I do have a plan to seek help and move on. I do appreciate the your words.

Yeah it’s all very rough. As you said, it feels like the day it all happened. Hang in there

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
