most women/men who care entirely too much about what people think of them choose not to though FTFY. In all seriousness, these days anyone with half a brain will judge far more harshly your decision to have kids when it's financially feasible over whether or not you married. My cousin has two kids and she and her husband rely pretty heavily on government assistance because they have a traditional marriage and one income. I personally could, as a single woman with an awesome career, support at le…

You can have kids without getting married. Happens all the time. No need to drag someone else down just because you can't keep it in your pants. Just don't get married, simple.

Now, whenever I see a couple in a seemingly happy marriage and a seemingly loyal wife, I go "PPPFFFFFFTT". Dude. Same. I was just telling a friend that my belief in good marriages gets weaker and weaker by the day. Every office I've ever worked in has these types of affairs. Everyone knows and only some of the culprits even care. They'll book a "work trip" with the one other co-worker and in the same day brag about their kid winning a soccer tournament. I've seen them greet their wives who dropp…

Do it. It helps. I did for a while and immersed myself in my other hobbies and interests. I remember taking a trip to my beach house right around then with a group of close friends, and as we all sat around the porch grilling steaks, pouring drinks, making toasts, laughing, and taking in the view of the beautiful sunset over the ocean, I found myself thinking "god damn I love my life." Those moments are important. Don't let a bunch of cowards behind a keyboard get you down. Maybe it's the amazin…

That's a good point, and they definitely would be. They're just generally not great people. The rift definitely comes form the cheating. I didn't find out about it until a couple years ago. I get it, I could probably forgive a cheater, but a cheater who slept with my sister? No way. I still think they'd be better off apart though. If anything it would cut down on the noise.

I'm curious what your opinion is on married couples who just can't make it work though. Like, I don't think any sane person thinks divorce should be a flippant decision and I certainly agree that extensive counseling should be on the table, but what about people who just can't? Example: my aunt and uncle married at 18, have been together almost 20 years, he started cheating when their son was diagnosed with cancer and the first person he cheated with was my aunt's sister (yes, really). They've b…

Woah where do you live? In my state it's a law that custody is automatically split 50/50 barring egregious, provable reasons. Are you outside US?

Right but I think what annierex is saying is even when you don't say "fuck it" and divorce, you can still try to stay together but if it doesn't work out, it can be just an environment just as if not more toxic than just biting the bullet and splitting up. And that can very well lead to broken, unhappy families.

Sure, and sometimes ex-husbands do the same thing. Just saying, there are a lot of factors. I think we can reasonably assume that kids who have both parents around and amicable probably do far better than kids who don't, regardless of whether they're married, divorced, or whatever the situation.

Yeah my grandparents are like this, they hate each other. I absolutely can't stand visiting them, it's always so awkward. It's no wonder that all of their 6 kids (with the exception of my mom, who was the oldest and moved states away while her siblings stayed) ended up in horrific marriages (my uncle has been cheating on one of my aunts for like 15 years and she knows but they won't divorce) that they refuse to get out of because their parents stayed together so they should too. Ahh Catholics.

Right exactly. Or a friend of mine whose parents divorced but literally were next door neighbors and they had both their parents around all the time. Or the opposite. I have an aunt and uncle who are married but he works in another state and is hardly ever even around. To their kids, they may as well have divorced parents.

I wonder if this is applicable to kids raised by married parents but don't have a parent around. Or married parents who hate each other. Like my parents have been happily married for 20 years but my grandparents (married almost 50 years) absolutely hate each other and are the reason I don't want to get married.

You can still be "around" and not married. And vice versa.

The fact that plenty of people also attempt those alternatives, and have them work out fine, without having to resort to a half-assed theory that dehumanizes women says more about you than anything else. I find myself moving away from the BP idea that TRP attracts misguided but otherwise decent people and more toward the idea that to be part of such a shitty community, you have to have already been a shitty person in the first place. TRP doesn't create assholes, it's just a platform for already-…
