The only proper answer to this has to come from unbiased introspection. Loyalty is important, and helping people is a worthwhile endeavor... But if you're not in a place where you can do this without self-destructing then you need to move on. There's no easy answer to that, and it will really depend on where you're at in life. This is one of the reasons I try to cultivate a strong sense of purpose and self, it puts me in a better position to help those that are struggling. I've been there before…

It's a fine line though. It's okay to expect love, but you can never expect loyalty. For a lot of people those are inextricably entwined... breaking that programming is a bitch.

Can't name any studies, but the behavior is the norm for the animal kingdom. It's the reason so many animals (lions, gorillas, chimps, walruses, etc.) end up with a patriarchal social order where the alpha male of the group ends up impregnating the bulk of the females to ensure the most useful genetic material is passed forward. I feel like there's two sides to Hollywood lying to everyone. Women only tell you what they WANT to want, because they think that's what's "proper." Hollywood filled their heads with crap, and then they pass the savings on to you. Wanting a dangerous man isn't "proper," and gosh they're all proper ladies do the you know?
