I really love this response and it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while too. Discussing the severity of abuse has little to do with the abuse and more about creating a hierarchy of victim hood. This is especially pernicious since women get the lion-share of resources when it comes to IPV leaving male victims (and victims of sexual minorities) to essentially fend for themselves. He’s essentially making an argument to maintain the status quo that preserves inequities in social treatmen…

I just read this and holy shit. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the subject of campus assault cases. and how false accusations can affect people. I love how the writer presents a pretty interesting picture of the landscape of sexual assault on campus as a campus administrator.

I think so too. I think the male advocacy space is broadening too and even more feminist leaning people are starting to try to tackle misandry in good faith. Even in places like r/MensLib, which while the moderation team is pretty strict and openly feminist (and sometimes misandrist), the actual community is absolutely great at shutting down derailing (people making it all about women) and highlighting how society contributes to male issues. I see this as a fantastic thing.

Weaponized Incompetence, as talked about online, is typically just women voicing frustration that their husband seems to make excuses for never doing the housework (or just work in general) that should be done. To me, it just sounds like a bunch of people collectively complaining to each other, which is fine. However, I think it's really weird that there is a tacit implication that men who are incompetent are purposefully incompetent or are purposefully trying to get their wives to do the work f…

I know what you're talking about and though I don't really get that sense in my everyday life when talking about men's issues, I think it's just the haughtiness that comes from people who think they know more/better than you do.

It’s is certainly okay to get angry and certainly okay to write letters to the authors/publishers pointing out the issue. It is never okay to be violent.

Oh wow! I'm really excited to sit down and listen to this podcast. I have a couple of questions: What are the strongest risk factors for male suicidality? Do the risk factors for male suicidality differ from female suicidality? Does male suicidality correlate strongly with trauma of any kind (or any certain types of trauma)? Are there any racial, class, or sexuality differences in risk factor profiles from male suicide victims? How pre-meditated are male suicide attempts, as in, do men tend to p…

Okay, I think the defining line is that abortion is justified because of bodily autonomy rights. The fetus is entirely dependent on the womb of the woman and without the woman believing that the fetus should grow in her, it wouldn't exist. The bodily autonomy argument for men in LPS isn't as strong (or as clear) because men can simply decide not to live with their children with minimal bodily impact. The child doesn't have to be dependent on their body (directly). I think the best way for any ty…

I don’t think TERFs “own” that talking point, but much of the criticisms of language like “people with penises” or “people with testes” in say a Healthline article is reminiscent of TERF-esque people (like Bari Weiss for example) who criticize the CDC for using terms like “birthing people”. I don’t even think an “inclusive” argument really is the most convincing to me. I think the best argument for this language, especially in heal articles is specificity. If you are writing about prostate cance…

Well yes, the physical toll of pregnancy is higher on women than it is on men but children don’t just need support just right after pregnancy, they need support throughout their first couple years of life. Ah the place I work, birth mothers get 20 weeks, while all other parents get 12 of paid leave. That should be the minimum at all work places.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates19/10/21 09:17 PM

This is an issue that I dont see enough of the men’s movement focusing on, yet it is core to Warren Farrell original ideas about benefiting men. Men should certainly be encouraged to take parental leave and it should be fully paid for. When men know they can spend time with their children without hurting the livelihood or ruining their career/income, they’ll do it!!

OP, this is good advice, I can't stress that enough. Finding purpose for many people tends to come in building relationships with others using our abilities/skills/crafts. I mean, think of a time you made a meal for a friend and they enjoyed it, or when you drew something for your mom/sibling and they said it looked nice, etc. You put a little bit of joy in their lives with what you've made: you've made an impact on someone else. I think if you're feeling lost, that's a good place to start

Okay, I see where you're coming from. I do think there is a lot of pressure from a certain crowd to use inclusive language out of fear of being called a TERF or a transphobe, but I'm also not sure about what conversation about the usage of "people with vaginas" and "people with penises" would even look like. I mean, how are those phrases at all problematic, especially in the context of a medical article (which is also the same context in which JK Rowling threw a fit -- it was a article on period…

Hi stranger, I can't tell you how nice it felt to read this. Its been a while a post on reddit has made me empathize with someone as much as I did just now. I'm an artist, but while I've always wanted to be creative, I never felt like I could because I wouldn't be able to make much money from it. Added onto that, I never really fit in with a lot of the more pretentious artsy types at my school. Imma be the odd one out and disagree with this post because it kinda edged too close to TERF-esque language to me. While I don't want to open myself to a Rowling, I've agreed with women who objected to the non-consensual attempt to erase the concept of "women" from our thoughts and words. It's a radical act that deserves to be discussed but was instead immediately adopted by corporate media. This is patently ridiculous. I think that double standard in his argument is a good one to point out and is a part of reason I became a male advocate. As a black man, it’s pretty shocking to learn that so much od the discrimination you face is due more to being a man than simply being black. That both white men and black men (along with a lot of other types of men) have to deal with a lot of the shitty stigmas and disadvantages that come with being a man. However, I disagree with disadvantages not being evidence of discrimi…

When it comes to the understanding of toxic masculinity, I definitely think this is the conclusion that many of it's advocates want us to come to. That toxic masculinity is not just behaviors that some men perpetrate, but that toxic masculinity is a core and essential part of masculinity, and more critically, that all men are complicit in the effects of toxic masculinity. I think this article is a great example of how toxic masculinity is applied as a cudgel against men in general.

I'm really really sorry about that. I'm not a gun owner, but I can understand that to a lot of people, the right to bear arms is a fundamental part of their lives. Despite that, I think your mental health seems to be a priority and you should try to find a work around (giving the gun to a loved one or a family member) for the time being to seek help for your clinical depression. I completely agree and I really didn't notice it until I started vocalizing any anger outwardly instead of bottling up. When a man expresses anger, people get scared, treat us as if we're dangerous and in the worst cases, seek to expel or remove us. I remember being angry while on the phone with an ex-SO and though we were thousands of miles away and I wasn't mad at her in any way, she still said that my anger frightened her and that she didn't feel safe being on the phone while I'm angry. /r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates25/09/21 07:11 PM

Yep, I think its because many are only conscious about the differences in race, not gender. One of the most frustrating things about how gender and race influence systems in our society is that white women (and especially attractive, rich, middle/upper class white women) tend to be given loads of privileges without much criticism. We hold them on a pedastal because its easier to care about a pretty white feminine face than a dark skinned male one.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates24/09/21 05:19 PM
1

I think that is a good point. There's very little talk about sorting out what the potentiality of danger using characteristics outside of gender. Men can also be suspicious of other men, but its often not based on the fact that the other person is a man, but for other characteristics (behavior, attire etc).

I mean there’s no disputing that reality that men tend to have a higher capacity for harm than women do. However, I think much of the creation of harm has more to do with social factors rather than some essential characteristic of being a man. For example, men are committing crimes at much lower rates than they ever have before while women’s levels of crime have continued to rise steadily since 1970s with women committing much more violent crime than ever before. In a world where weapons are rea…

Ugh, this is an annoying low effort post. Misogyny is already a hate crime in England and Wales so I'm not sure what he's on about. But furthermore, there are bills that support making both misandry and misogyny a hate crime in England. Though to be honest, I don't know how easy it would be to prove that was part of a cause of death/assault.

But even all of that ignores another big factor; society's different perceptions of male and female sexuality. Female sexuality is considered fragile and expected to be pure. Male sexuality is considered inherently damaging and dirty. It's part of why lesbians gets and not taken seriously. While gay men are considered gross and predatory. I certainly agree with this point and I think that's what I was trying to highlight. Female sexuality is seen as less threatening, soft, fragile, tender etc wh…

Yep, and when it does, it can feel like a justification for that homophobia, especially since misandry is more accepted by society at large.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates23/09/21 05:13 PM
4

Well there's a lot of things at play here, one of which is missing white girl syndrome. When a white woman dies, its a tragedy but when anyone else, particularly men of color, die its a statistic. However, in the face of her death, I'm not entirely convinced that we should take the "kill all men", "men are the root of problems in society" rhetoric seriously because it's fundamentally stupid.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates23/09/21 05:12 PM
10

The cure for homophobia isn't to label it, in my mind. It's coming to terms with a truth that the vast majority of non-heterosexual men share something in common with their hetero brethren. That something? They have no desire to rape someone. No desire to engage in nonconsensual sex acts. I think that's a good point and ultimately the mindset shift that I had to go through. But I dont think it's always internalized misandry. Trauma is a deeply complex beast, and I am really glad you're processin…

Wow, none of these comments are hitting the mark at all. I used to ask this question quite a bit until I started readily engaging with feminists and feminist sympathizers. Here are the categories that I think best explain why feminism is so popular: Ignorance: This is by and far the most impactful reason why feminism is so popular and why mainstream and simplistic notions of gendered oppression live on so much. Most people just dont know. They often don’t believe that men can actually be victims…

Lol, I don’t blame you. I’ve been in an LTR for 4 years and only recently have I gotten more comfortable having sex with her. The most important step is the one you’ve already taken, talking about your fears, but the next one is talking about being scared with a potential partner too. When it comes to sex, you really have to be open as possible with your feelings, fears and anxieties and be ready to hear someone tear them apart and be delighted when they don’t, because if they don’t make you fee…

That type of uncertainty is a red flag in a relationship. Do you really want to woman who would treat you like that? Ask yourself this before you contemplate about how “women” work because trust me, and every other woman out there, they are all very very different and there are plenty who know for sure what they want.

Something weird to me is that on average, given an equal base, it’s likely that black women out perform black men at every level of education. They are more educated, they likely do better given a disadvantaged start (which disproportionately affects AA), the entire gap between black men and women and white men and women is solely due to the gap between black men and white men. and they tend to get better grades in school and attend college more often than boys do.

Ah so you have issues with the word incel there. I see what you’re talking about, but I think that the point of allowing misogyny in the subreddit to be the main focus of the complaint. But yep, I don’t think we should use incel as an insult anymore.
/r/MenSupportMen18/09/21 05:11 AM

Dude, the person obviously wasn’t trying to be insulting. The right answer here is no because if misogyny is allowed, I dont want to be in it.

Well, to be completely fair to Shoe, talking to feminists about men’s issues is like trying t explain color to someone who’s color blind. From their perspective, men’s issues don’t really exist, they’re just side effects of women’s issues. The issues like suicide and loneliness, while also being framed as being a product of women’s issues, are particular points where it is easier for feminists to explain away with notions of toxic masculinity and again pivot the blame mainly onto men.

I completely understand where you’re coming from my guy. I went to an HBCU and realized the same thing that even as a clear minority on campus (nearly 70% of the student body is female), men were still perceived as the privileged sex
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates14/09/21 07:05 AM

Yep I’ve noticed that. MRAs have an unfortunate stigma. It’s kinda refreshing, especially talking to feminists from third world countries/immigrants on how much compassion and empathy they can have for men’s issues and MRA pov’s as long as you don’t say the phrase “Men’s Rights”.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t find that book that helpful, especially in my current LTR. It seems like OP is looking for advice to lower libido and whether it’s the right thing to do. The number one way to approach and improve sex life is just honest, direct, and kind communication. She’s not a one night stand or a friends with benefits but his wife and they both need to be honest with each other about their libidos and enthusiasm to have sex.

Since you guys are already married, I’m not sure I can really comment on a solid solution other than masturbation and reflection on whether this is something you truly want to do. But for some of the younger guys who read this: when dating, please make sure that your sex drives are similar and that the woman you’re dating is enthusiastically into you. I think there’s a lot of guys who settle for women who will “have them” as in the woman has to “put up” with their presence. This isn’t the way to…

Is walking at night safer for men? In the US, we are certainly more likely to be victims of violent crime and most crime tends to happen in the night time. Anecdotally, I'm sure many women have been harassed at night and that's absolutely awful, but I typically hear stories of violence, robbery, and assault from men, not women. And it seems that some data does reflect this notion.

The most dominant strains of feminism and the feminist movement were pioneered and centered wealthy, white, upper-class women in favor of women of color and were teeming with racism from the very start. I don't think many feminists today disagree with this idea because its mostly accurate. A lot of feminism and feminist thought seems to center on a perverse notion of power and agency, one that ignores the reality of the vast majority of the men that ever existed.

So I’ve thought about it for a while and to be quite frank, as bad as feminists can be, they are a far cry from the misandry conservatives in the US believe and to be honest, I know how much people hate these arguments, but feminism has helped men in some ways (though it is not doing nearly enough). Here’s an article that summarizes how cognitive distortions can show up in incels. If you look at this with scrutiny, you can see that evidence of cognitive distortions abounds. There’s usually a reference of self-disgust at one’s appearance (skinny or not attractive enough). Some of the more harrowing lines of the results: This is supported by the fact that only 14.3% of victims in our study notified the po- lice about the incident. Ie, if someone shoots up an organization that seeks to support the welfare of AAPI people we don’t say: “That organization shouldn’t exist because it’s existence endangers the lives of AAPI”. Yep, it’s a little unknown fact that we don’t really focus and talk about. Men experience a higher prevalence of RC than women do and particularly black men and women face it disproportionately more than almost any other group. This is a good point. Working class/lower class women tended to be a lot more industrious and self-reliant than upper class women though much of the feminism we have today is derived off of the experiences of upper class white women’s experiences that often white wash the past in their own favor. A good example of this is abscence of feminist literature on the owning, selling and commodification of enslaved black people by white female slave owners who were often gifted enslaved people as babies…

I don’t think the fact that men do not have as much in group bias as women discounts “patriarchy” at all. It might contradict a specific perspective on what patriarchy is: namely the one that says that “society was setup to protect the well-being and power of men by men because men care about their own well-being rather than the well being of women”, but that’s not how a lot of people (feminists included) think of patriarchy. Patriarchy is a bit of a loaded term because has very little clarity o…

Saw you guys on MensLib and I really really love the idea!! Is there anyway I could donate to the organization? Also u/a-man-from-earth cans the mods sticky this post?

That’s how I felt about the post too. Sounds like a really frustrated guy wrote it. However, if I take it seriously, I think there’s a lot of truth to it, it’s really really hard to get a girlfriend to care about your emotions without it being all about her.

Honestly, I think it depends on the kind of society you come from (which is obvious) because in some cultures, women are taught to respect men in a certain way (domestic duties, being quaint, don’t nag too much etc) that makes them invisible (in a sense). Currently, cultures with messages like that for women are dying out and being replaced with a more empowering, abrasive and ambitious set of messages. While I don’t mind that messaging, I think a lot of this frames men as both a goal and an adv…

Ah, maybe I didnt word the comment correctly. It’s like saying “woman are harmed most by war because they have to live without fathers, brothers and sons”. While the primary victimization of war comes from men, women are centered in these conversations by people like left-liberals/feminists leaning individuals. This creates a veil that obscured the primarily victims of war: men.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates28/07/21 10:38 PM

Well yeah, most left-liberals don’t particularly care about men and men’s issues directly. It’s usually hidden by the veil that “this is more harmful to women’s X”. Matt Walsh is a POS and everyone who is below the age of 40 knows it.

I find the statement that they made problematic but I think you can raise well adjusted children in same sex homes. The assumption that boys need more “feminine” energy rubs me the wrong way because it suggests that boys are somehow born with more “masculine” energy that needs to be civilized/tamed/neutered by “femininity” which is just a more self-righteous take on the misandrist/misogynistic “woman tames man” trope.

Anecdotal evidence is typically good at sparking conversation, not proving a point. So if someone says that: “I’ve heard stories about black and moc students being removed from campus and losing their scholarships based on accusations of sexual assault/misconduct”, then perhaps that topic merits more research to prove that it is happening. And if this sounds super specific to you, that’s because its it is a research problem that is gaining increasing amount of evidence and backing despite effort…

Why would you be out of line here? You’re a man just like the rest of us. But to the subject of your comment, I find your perspective pretty interesting because I wouldn’t be surprised if pre-transition, you heard more aggressive anti-male messaging and that affected your own view of self and transitioning

I like and agree with this post for the most part. The usage of the word intersectional makes me cringe, but I think the way it’s presented here is less from a hierarchical standpoint but more from “some men might have it worse than others, but at the end of the day, they’re being targeted because they’re men”

It’s not hard at all for a couple of reasons: 1) Left-wing isn’t a broad community, it’s a broad group of ideologies many of which contradict and a oppose each other. 2) I tend not to identify myself with any wing or organization but rather by policy and values. So it doesn’t feel terrible to talk about men’s issues and tell be left wing because to me, my left wing values inform me on how to discuss men’s issues

This is so fucked. So very very fucked. What’s even more disturbing, like you pointed it out is that she doesn’t see it as a big deal and has done it before. What the actual fuck. I know what too many people who don’t believe that women can rape at all including my own parents and other female rape victims who consider themselves feminists. It’s absolutely disgusting and awful.

Is u/Jozarin actually the creator of MensLib? Couldn’t find much about creating MensLib in his profil that you linked (from the one that says “men are trash”) On where is the evidence of u/Dewey_Darl gloating about banning a male rape victim survivor. I agree with the goal f the comment but the evidence of the claims seem to be a bit lacking for me. Maybe I’m missing something

Weird, I’ve been on here since there were only 1,000 or so subs (on other accounts) and I’ve never seen any racism at all in the community. I’ve also never seen anyone called a s**p on this sub either. It’s weird what an alternate reality people live in.

I agree with the sentiment of the article. I think the MRM should be a bit more focused on intersectionality of being black (and LGBT) and being a man.

I don’t think many women today in the US and Europe do that. Most of the time when it happens in more developing and less developed countries, it’s in some part, arranged by the family or the product of violence (afaik). Women who stay things like that in the US and Europe either mature or stay single especially since men struggle to provide for themselves.

Vast majority? No, but majority, as far as we know yes. Though as we expand the definition of rape to include male victimization (made to penetrate) more and more female sexual aggression/assault is coming up to the forefront and it could be the case that women have always been assaulting men but we’ve ignored it.

Yep, this is accurate. This study conducted on Pakistani students shows that men tend to have higher rates than women when it comes to body dysmorphia. This study (the one that was posted) is more of a summary of the a lot of the data on male eating disorders and shows how men and boys are affected. There’s a lot of notable studies in there such as one showing that men are taken less seriously than women when it comes to diagnosis, the framework for dealings with ED is very female centric, and t…

Abstract: Historically, male presentations of eating disorders (EDs) have been perceived as rare and atypical - a perception that has resulted in the systematic underrepresentation of males in ED research. This underrepresentation has profoundly impacted clinical practice with male patients, in which i) stigmatization and treatment non-engagement are more likely, ii) a distinct array of medical complexities are faced, and iii) symptom presentations differ markedly from female presentations. Furt…

Yeah I did. I suspect it comes from general ignorance because of past historical revisionism because I didn’t know we even had DV laws until the 60-70s.

Copied directly from the article on sci-hub Historically women, under the common law, were viewed as property of the men they married and the use of force by a husband against a wife was considered to be lawful. While noticeable efforts were pursued to change this stereotypi- cal belief of females throughout the 1800s and early 1900s, domestic violence failed to gain the attention of lawmakers in the United States until the 1970s. As a one-sided display of own- ership of women as property for ne…

I completely agree with this take. Paul Elam, and to and extent Peter Wright, are the most insufferable members of the men’s movement. Red Pill ideologies are just as bad for men as any type of feminist men’s movement.
