Actually, another question worth checking. How to respond if the girl turns her attention to your "opponent" and becomes dismissive of what you have to say? It's generally embarrassing when you feel like you are being dropped for someone else and have nowhere to go to cope.

Man, I feel you. Let me share a little bit of a thought of mine. When I go for some cold approach, I try to do it by using some situational remark (indirect). Imo, the act of going to them and ask something out of the blue should be enough to cause a little of surprise on the girl(s) and, consequently, make them ask something about myself in return.
