Except people don't generally shoot after one punch on their loved one. Also, it says in this article that the mother was treated for non-threatening injuries, as in plural. If this guy could cause injuries with one punch, then the boy was still right in shooting him. Do you also think that the man who found a guy molesting his daughter and beat him to death is a murderer?

Then, the man allegedly began physically attacking her while her son watched. Physically attacking implies multiple strikes. This is as much murder as shooting someone who breaks into your house with the intent to only steal. Is that escalation of force? Yes. Are you still defending your family because you never know what could happen? Yes. This is the same case here, except you replace robbery with domestic abuse.

He wasn't just punching her, he was beating the crap out of her. This isn't a one time thing. In cases like these, the abuse is continuous and the boy was just defending his mother. I'm 100% supportive of MRAs, but stop extending your bubble of support to abusive douchebags that happen to be male.
