In case of a health crisis I would opt for a gift card for food delivery. New baby, health crisis, or death in the family usually means they may be on time/emotional bandwidth to cook something healthful and enjoyable. DoorDash and Grubhub both have healthy or delicious options.

Just my two cents. If he is really Special Forces, and he really was about to roll out/deploy/receive an assignment, his communications can go dark at any time for indefinite periods. This is something you will have to decide if you’re okay with.
