I thought it was pretty obvious that what's important is positive, informed consent between the people involved. Agreed. When the context is one of a disagreement, you want to err on the side of caution and avoid things that could be (mis)construed as taking things to a more extreme, possibly violent level. I think the response of the people in the bar shows exactly why you do that. You want to avoid suspicion? Avoid doing things that are suspicious.

The distinction must be made very clear that rape is not just "unwanted sex" but to emphasise the element of force in it. This viewpoint is what's wrong with the world. You kind of need consent. Not the lack of no, the presence of yes. Positive consent is a pretty good foundation for all human interaction.

If you're dressed all goth and are in an environment where that is 'unsusual' you might get comments I don't think "Wow, that is a really unusual ensemble" and "Those shorts make your ass look nice" are the same thing. I don't think you quite understand what it's like to be cat-called. For instance, someone once thought it appropriate to yell from his car while I was riding my bike at midnight that I have a nice ass. There is nothing about that situation that didn't enrage me. And that opinion/feeling is valid.

I think it is true that men commit most rapes. So, those things are trying to cut out a big chunk of rape by targeting men with their message. That's fucked up. You'd think it would be obvious to anyone that rape is nonconsensual sex (or better said "penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person [the perpetrator, perhaps], without the consent of the victim") between any two people.

I think she made a small point about how women are treated at conferences and in public. I think Dawkins chimed in and contributed nothing of use to the discourse. If his point wasn't that Watson shouldn't have said anything because there are worse problems affecting "Muslima", then I don't know what his point was.

I intended to question the necessity of what he said (an elementary logical fallacy) and to question the method he used to communicate his opinion (a snide blog comment). I didn't suggest that he be censored. I said that his opinion was, in this case, stupid and unnecessary. Just because he shouldn't have said anything doesn't mean that he shouldn't have been allowed to say something.

I think she did that as a somewhat humorous way of pointing out that there were tons of mistakes. She obviously could have spent time fixing each one, but it would have been a waste of her, or anyone's, time.

He didn't need to. Watson is aware of the privilege she has as a white American. But if he really wanted to point it out, he could have simply said, "I think it's important that we point out how small of a problem this is in comparison to the many women's rights abuses around the world." He'd have been wrong for the already mentioned reason that small problems shouldn't be ignored simply because there are larger problems. But, hey, he wouldn't have started off by being a jerk.

Hmm. I suppose the rating might be skewed differently than what I said. But how people rate others and how people act aren't necessarily the same. If I've got this right, you're saying that women have an easier time finding a man to have sex with than vice versa. Assuming that's true, wouldn't the first step to changing that be for men to less easily accept and act on the sexual advances of women? I can see that the other side of the argument would be that women have outrageously high standards or something, and are all together sex-hating prudes who exist to make men miserable... or something, but that seems to me to be kind of ridiculous…
