In my experience these are the 2 best types of gyms that are away from the "mcdojo" craze and offer the best "real" fight self defense. A good bjj gym will obviously have a couple black belt trainers and its quiet easy to find out who they got their belt from so you can establish a pedigree of sorts. Muay thai gyms will have guys fighting amateur and pro fights, look out for local shows and posters, talk to the fighters get gym names etc or google. It's quite easy. 1	One year later and how to travel the world long term The more north you go in Thailand the cheaper things get, outside the main cities of course. I can only speak about phuket. All the gyms have websites so just google thai gym phuket ot wherever you are thinking about. 1	One year later and how to travel the world long term I have trained in phuket thailand on a couple occasions. Intensity, live on site and meal plans are widely available. Tiger Muay Thai is by far the best gym imo. There are better muay thai orientated gyms but tiger focus on a number of disciplines. It's a great mma gym with Roger Huarta as head coach. Other good gyms in the area are Lion Muay Thai and Supa Rawai Muay Thai. Numerous others in the area too...this is just phuket.
